During the remodel, doorways turned into arches and the back hall was incorporated into the kitchen, while the butler's pantry was maintained and recycled, with the sole exception of new countertops. "We reused what we could, even keeping the old-fashioned radiators," says Eileen Kollias, then on staff at Expo Design Center. Kollias also solved the flooring problem in the kitchen and pantry by having a prefinished engineered wood floor laid over the uneven asbestos tiles.
