AN EVERYDAY ESCAPE: The Traditional Home NKBA Kitchen

People are entertaining more at home and guests often never leave the kitchen, says Robert Young, Traditional Home senior design and projects editor, who designed the kitchen space. To provide for plenty of comfortable seating without a tangle of chair legs, Robert opted for a 6-foot-long teak dining table and bench that pull up to a window seat banquette. The ceiling height was lowered and the side walls bumped in to subtly separate the dining space from the working end of the kitchen. "It makes the dining area more intimate, but people can sit at the table and be part of the conversation in the kitchen," he says. An Armstrong solid maple floor in Pewter resists scratches and is a cinch to clean, especially when Monty, the Yorkshire terrier, gobbles up table scraps.
