When a young couple working in the tech industry bought this three-story condo in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood, their No. 1 priority was relocating the master bedroom to the top floor to enjoy its breathtaking views of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. By adding a walk-in closet to the room, they also got all the storage they needed.

Brilliant views of the San Francisco Bay are visible above the 3-foot-tall curved half-wall of this loft bedroom, which overlooks a second-floor living area. The windows, a few feet away from the half-wall, have a UV coating and roller shades to help filter the light. The homeowners say they never lower the shades. “I’m not sure if they wear eye shades at night, but they claim to keep them open all night long,” co-designer Jemy Massie of Studio Revolution says.

A spiral staircase leads from the second floor to the bedroom. At the top of the stairs sits this reclaimed-wood dresser and one side of a newly added L-shaped wall. “It’s nice to have a little transition space before walking smack-dab into the middle of a bedroom,” co-designer Emily Ellis says.

The other side of the L-shaped wall runs parallel to the bed. The two sides create an enclosure for a 12-by-7-foot walk-in closet the designers added to make the third-floor loft a proper bedroom. Some of the closet shelves — made from piping and reclaimed wood — can be seen in the framed mirror leaning against the back wall of the room.
Not wanting to interrupt the flow of the ceiling beams, the designers secured the top of the L-shaped wall to the beams with metal posts. They chose wallpaper featuring images of iguanas, birds and flowers. “We always try to add an element of black and white to all of our projects. It adds instant drama to any space,” Massie says.

“The homeowners absolutely love reclaimed wood, so we added it throughout the house, but we didn’t want it to look identical, so we hung it in in different ways,” Ellis says. The wood on the wall behind the bed is in a herringbone pattern to contrast with the lines of the wood floors and the timber-framed beams.
The bedding on the distressed leather bed reflects the couple’s love of travel. An indigo-dyed pillow from Japan and a traditional-patterned pillow from Mexico top a handmade Brazilian blanket. “Supposedly there’s about a hundred different families in a small town in Brazil that make these blankets, and each family has their own distinct pattern,” Massie says.

Above the bed, a resin replica of a Texas longhorn skull adds a touch of Wild West to the room.
The nightstands are topped with vignettes that speak to the homeowners’ interests. This one features two vintage cameras that reflect a passion for photography. A marble sculpture of a hand giving the peace sign and an exposed-bulb sconce complete the scene.
Sconce: L sconce, Schoolhouse Electric
