This Canadian weekend retreat less than an hour’s drive from Calgary, Alberta, has a heavy dose of modern clean lines and sleek low-profile furniture, but keep your eye out for some unexpected twists. Mixed in with its bevy of midcentury gems and sleek subway tile are rustic touches that speak to the wild foothills and cowboy spirit of western Canada.

Who lives here: This is a weekend home for a family of four
Location: Priddis, Alberta, Canada
Size: Five bedrooms, five bathrooms
Designer: Elena Del Bucchia Design
In the front entryway, a framed maple leaf painting and a pair of rugged cowboy boots stand out against the gallery white walls, sleek kitchen cabinets and trio of glass pendants above the kitchen island. One of the homeowners hails from Norway, and the other is from the rugged plains of Saskatchewan. The home’s decor combines Scandinavian style with hints of Canadian cowboy spirit.

A pair of midcentury-inspired chairs, a rustic wood table and a custom banquette topped in plaid fabric comprise a sunny corner breakfast nook. All of the home’s window frames are stained Douglas fir to retain warmth and a connection to the woodsy surroundings. “Corner windows and corner banquettes go hand in hand,” Del Bucchia says. “It draws in great morning light to read the newspaper with a nice cup of coffee.”
The sage-colored kitchen cabinets extend along the floor to form the base of the banquette, which includes storage for napkins and placemats.

The large Douglas fir ceiling beams make a grand statement in the open dining area. A traditional, but not overly ornate, chandelier helps to draw the eye down. The custom dining table includes a modern wood base topped with a solid slab of concrete. A vintage red Oriental rug completes the scene.
“Many of the vintage rugs and artwork were inherited from one of the homeowners’ parents. Using them throughout the space adds character, color and charm,” Del Bucchia says.

Del Bucchia created what she calls an “indoor barn” by adding walls and a white sliding barn door that opens to the home’s library, seen at rear left. “The homeowners wanted a space for the kids to do their homework that could be closed off but still close to the action,” she says. Transom windows at the top of the wall draw in additional light.
The narrow library shares a double-sided fireplace with the living room. Built-in bookshelves with customizable shelving flank the fireplace, which is faced with manufactured ledge cut stone. Tucked into the space are a classic Eames lounge chair and ottoman. It’s a great spot for curling up with a good book in front of a fire on cool Alberta evenings.
Coffee table: Noguchi, Herman Miller
The large living room windows provide stunning views of the Alberta foothills. “It’s really one of those views that never gets old,” Del Bucchia says. “Since the sunlight is indirect, it was best to leave the windows unadorned to not interfere with the views.”

Like a large black slash across a white wall, a Toronto-based artist’s multipanel black and white painting of a mountain range brings a modern interpretation of Western decor to the living room. The use of bold black in the nearly all-white space is repeated in the coffee table, made from repurposed car tires.

Del Bucchia says that a compromise was struck in the master bedroom. Since one of the homeowners wanted a wood-frame bed and the other wanted an upholstered one, Del Buccia designed a hybrid to satisfy both parties. “It’s inspired by modern wingback chairs, with its graceful wood curves and tightly upholstered back,” the designer says.

The white material palette of the subway tile wall, countertops and cabinets makes the most of the light from the one thin rectangular window, which provides the only source of natural sunlight in the master bathroom. Rustic wood-framed mirrors warm up the room.

The guest bedroom is a study in minimalism, with its tightly upholstered bed and sleek ripple-fold curtains, merged with tribal-inspired pillows and carved wood deer heads to continue the home’s delicate balance of modern-meets-rustic style.

Not one to let extra space go to waste, Del Bucchia created a kids’ play zone at the bottom of the stairwell. “The kids love this space. It’s perfectly sized for them and their friends to hang out and play,” she says.
