Whether it’s an element of comfort, an artistic statement or a functional feature, carpeting is often a focal point around which interior designers create a room. And to get hip to the latest rug designs, professionals head to the New York International Carpet Show (NYICS). We spoke with a few rug designers who will showcase their latest rugs and carpets at this year’s event. We got an idea of what you might expect to see popping up in homes soon, and the focus is on versatility, subtle colors, detailed images and simple customization.

NYICS
Versatility

One of the main messages that textile designers are looking to communicate to homeowners this year is that their products are versatile. Designers are creating pieces that can work for any style, from traditional to contemporary. And, because of the trending simplicity of rug colors and patterns, these pieces can transition easily with updates to furniture or home decor.

Ana Cunningham, the creative director at Creative Matters Inc., which will be exhibiting at the upcoming NYICS, says many textile designers and manufacturers will be focusing on versatility in their 2016 lines by using classic motifs to create contemporary designs. Her rug seen here, she says, would work in a penthouse with modern furniture just as well as it would with classic wood furnishings in a traditional home.

Subtle Colors

Incorporating subtle hues helps designers play up or play down other elements in a space. The mix of warm and cool tones in this rug lets it add a hint of personality to an otherwise neutral space or help anchor more vibrant decor.

Detailed Designs

While contemporary geometric patterns remain popular, some designers, like Jan Kath, are experimenting with more recognizable visuals. His Clouds rug, seen hanging on the wall beyond the dining table in the photo above and in detail in the photo at left, was inspired by the works of 16th- and 17th-century Baroque painters, which he discovered while traveling. His goal was “to bring the beauty of the sky to the living room floor,” he says.

Up to 30 shades of blue and gray are used in this piece, which is a mix of Tibetan wool and Chinese silk. All of Kath’s pieces are hand-woven in Nepal, Thailand, India or Morocco, using the traditional technique of the country in which it’s manufactured. Using ecological natural dyes, Kath is able to produce more than 1,200 colors of yarn to use in his designs, allowing him to create artistic rugs and carpets.

Simply Customizable

Some interior designers and homeowners are finding their way to companies that create one-of-a-kind rugs by letting homeowners pick their own color mixes, such as Lapchi Handwoven Carpets. “The perfect rug for a client is a rug that is made specifically for them,” Lani Baker of Lapchi says.

Lapchi’s 2016 line will elaborate on its 2015 designs in a muted color palette of silvers and grays, along with aubergine and green from natural and simple dyes. Two of the company’s designs are pictured at left and below.

Lapchi’s rugs are created using primarily the traditional Nepalese method. But Baker says that because Nepal has just suffered major natural disasters, the company is giving the Nepal staff time to be with family and help with relief efforts. “What we will show during NYICS will be a return to a decorative formality in our work using simple color mixes that will be easy to customize,” she says.

Carpets and rugs serve multifunctional purposes in a room: They can create cohesion, act as a main feature or simply add artistic value. The trend with textile manufacturers now is to create pieces versatile enough to fulfill all those purposes with simple and subtle details and design.
