A large three-car garage connected to their house was an ideal location for these New Jersey homeowners to construct a guest suite for friends and family, and to finally display their large collection of Adirondack furniture and accessories. While most of the decor had already been purchased, it was interior designer Ginny Zonfrilli’s task to create a lodge-like retreat that could beautifully incorporate the homeowners’ prized collection.

Location: Franklin Lakes, New Jersey
Size: About 700 square feet (65 square meters)

Using the natural resources onsite was one of the homeowners’ goals of the project. The main room’s walls and ceiling are composed of sliced white pine logs from the property. The branches from the same white pines were stripped of their bark and used to construct the stair railing that leads to the garage below.

The designer incorporated a large pine cone into a newell post for the custom stair rail. The space is filled with rustic accessories such as the antlers, vintage snowshoes and awood duck seen in the photo above. “We wanted guests to feel as if they were stepping into an authentic lodge,” Zonfrilli says.

While the homeowners had collected the majority of the furniture pieces and accessories over many years, the large wood and leather bed was purchased at Ralph Lauren Home specifically for the new space.

The floral-patterned wallcovering in the bathroom is fabric with padding underneath to add warmth and dampen sound. “The bathroom walls provide a nice contrast to many of the harder surfaces used throughout the space,” Zonfrilli says.

The guest suite has a full kitchen. Its faux-linen wallpaper is in a shade similar to that of the white pine walls found throughout the rest of the suite. The kitchen allows longer-term guests to cook meals in their own space.
