Tiles are a traditional paving material commonly associated with warm climates and Mediterranean-style gardens. Though traditionally made by hand by artisans, new types of tiles have come on the market featuring classic and modern designs. Tiles make a beautiful specialty paver with their bold palette and fresh patterns. Read on to learn about tiles and how to use them in landscape paving.
The basics: Paving tiles are made of clay or a porcelain-ceramic mix, then painted with rich colors and glazed to seal those colors before being fired in a kiln. Tiles are made in molds, and traditional, artisanal tiles will have imperfections and variations in color.
Cost: $10 to $20 per square foot, installed. Cost depends on the type of tile used. Custom and artisanal tile is more expensive than mass-produced tile.

Size and color: Tiles are most commonly available as squares in sizes such as 2-by-2-inch up to 6-by-6-inch. Outdoor paving tiles should be at least half an inch thick.
Many color options are available. Deep blues and greens can be achieved by glazing porcelain tiles; terra-cotta or clay tiles come in a range that includes rusty reds, pinks and creams.
Finishes: Tiles must be finished in a chemical process that creates the nonslip texture necessary for outdoor use.

Sustainability: Tiles are a sustainable choice when sourced locally. Light-colored tiles help reflect solar heat.

Maintenance: Tiles need to be cleaned annually with a solution made for the specific type of tile. Check with your manufacturer or artisan producer for advice on products to use. A tile sealer will help prevent staining.
