The Home Office Nook: File It Under 'Space Saver'

With computers getting sleeker and better-looking all the time, and more work going paperless, a dedicated home office is no longer vital for some. Why not free up some extra space by downsizing the work zone? Instead of a whole room, try a nook, niche, counter or mini desk within a larger living space. Let these nine examples inspire you.

1. Cubbies and brights. A simple built-in desk with a row of drawers and overhead cubby-like shelves provide plenty of storage for important papers and supplies while maintaining a sleek profile. A lemon yellow stool plus neon accessories in the cubbies make for a cheerful, modern look. A setup like this would work well in a kitchen, living room or hallway.

2. Monochrome niche. What could have been used as a pantry gets put to work in this kitchen as a neat little desk area. All it took were a few simple white shelves, a black bentwood chair and a firm resolve to keep the clutter out.

3. Library table. It’s far harder than it sounds to put a desk in the living room without it sticking out like a sore thumb. Try a slender wooden desk tucked against a tall bookcase. When your desk is out in the open, it’s especially important to keep the surface clear and to choose a chair that works with the rest of your furnishings. This Eames side chair fits the bill nicely.

4. Kitchen counter. The kitchen, being a hub of activity in the home, is a popular place to put a little workstation. It makes a handy spot for catching up on email, looking up recipes online or doing homework. In this custom-designed kitchen, a unique angled counter incorporates a storage bench and mini workspace.

5. Secluded corner. Away from the main living space but not completely cut off from it, this office nook provides the best of both worlds. If you’re remodeling, talk with your architect about incorporating a mini room like this, to provide just enough space for work without eating up as much square footage as an entire home office.

6. Cottage charm. A wall-mounted desk painted to match the wall color makes a simple and attractive workspace in a bedroom, living room or just about anywhere. Save more space by using sconce lighting to illuminate the surface, and mount shelving above to store items.

7. Floating desk. This floating wood desk and cabinet paired with an industrial-style stool take up hardly any space, for a look that’s appealing, warm and modern. It’s one of those obvious things, but be sure to pick a spot with an outlet nearby before installing a floating desk if you plan to use your computer there.

8. Shelf perch. If you’ve been wanting to try a standing desk for health reasons, one of the easiest ways is with a floating shelf to set your laptop on. Customize the height to fit you and install a few narrower shelves above the standing desk for storing supplies.

9. Have laptop, will travel. If you mostly work on a laptop and choose paperless options whenever possible, you may not need a dedicated workspace at all. For brief moments, you may want to get comfy on the sofa or bed — and work for longer periods at the kitchen counter or dining table.
