On July 26, 1775, the first U.S. postal system was established, with Benjamin Franklin as the premier postmaster general. Before that, the colonies had no real post offices. Instead, mail sent was typically delivered to inns and taverns. Now, in 2015, there are more than 40,000 post offices and over 212 billion pieces of mail delivered within the United States and its properties. The USPS also ships to more than 180 countries. So whether you’re located in the U.S. or not, let’s celebrate the gift of snail mail.
Homeowners: Show us where you receive mail at your house. Is it a simple slot in the door, a custom-built box or your own creative invention? Please post a photo in the Comments section. Your mailbox could be featured in an upcoming story on Houzz.
Professionals: Have you implemented any unique or creative mailbox designs for your clients? We want to see your pics too.
The photo shown here depicts a beautiful old-fashioned mailbox complete with the traditional flag. Embedded in the flower bush, this structure is more than a mail collector, it’s part of the landscape design, making stepping out to receive those letters a walk in the garden.
