Summer Color Combo: Pink and Orange

I remember a day when orange and pink were considered clashing colors. But fashion-forward redheads (think Joan on Mad Men) were the first to show me just how well a lively orange and hot pink can go together. The bold and bright duo adds dynamic energy to any room of the house, indoors or out. And there’s no better time to give it a try than during the hot days of summer.
Add some shock to a bathroom. You’ve got to really love shocking pink to cover a vanity in it, but no risk, no reward (and you can always prime and paint if you tire of it). In this child’s bathroom, a graphic geometric orange and white shower curtain is the right foil for the daring cabinetry.

Keep a contemporary home colorful. Just because a home is contemporary doesn’t mean its color palette is limited to neutrals. A range of pinks and oranges adds spicy Miami modern style that brightens up this dining room.
Look to dahlias and zinnias for outdoor color inspiration. This London deck is ready for sunny days and summer parties thanks to solid pink and orange outdoor upholstery and a unique covered rill full of hot pink rocks.

Add Moroccan style. This office has serious souk appeal. It gets spicy flavor from paprika and bold energy from raspberry, which complement the Moroccan architectural features and hammered metal lanterns.

Brighten up a rustic room. A mix of tribal-inspired textiles is a delightful surprise in a rustic-style Colorado chalet.
Bring some glam color to the bar. Whether you like colorful cocktails or strictly clear ones, the bar is a super place to add some saturated hues. This clever bar arrangement does double duty, adding ambient light and extra seating and storage to the room via the ottomans.
Enliven a transitional room. Hot pink and orange accents rev up the style of a mostly neutral room, with solids and a more modern abstract pattern breathing new life into classic furnishings. The best part about this approach is that it’s so easy to switch out the accents when you’re in more of a wintry oxblood kind of mood.
The same rule works in a modern room. The hues on the lamp and pillows look like they were plucked from the painting and amped up. Peonies are the icing on the cake.

Keep it tailored. Pink and orange can be no-frills, even in a girl’s room. Stripes, solids and tightly tailored upholstery give the bright colors a clean, updated look.

Use a color-blocking strategy. Big blocks of each color make a dramatic design impact, especially in a mostly white room. Here the ceiling and shelves bring the pink, while one large orange square holds its own.
Hit the mute button. Is what you’ve been seeing too bright for you? If so, turn the dial down one or two clicks. While the colors here are still rich, all of the white and the diluted tones of the pink and orange lend a calmer feel to the bedroom.
