Beyond the Dorm Room: Decorate Your Home With Movie Posters

The United States and much of the world have long had a love affair with the cinema. Indeed, some have called Hollywood movies America’s greatest export. It therefore makes perfect sense that movie posters have long been a favorite style selection — though often one that conjures up images of college dorms and thumbtacks. This collection of movie posters used throughout the home dispels the myth that posters are just for kids.

1. Living Room Landmarks

An eclectic Brooklyn apartment features the movie poster for the Italian release of Desperately Seeking Susan, which sits above the fireplace. “Madonna was a huge influence on me as a child, and that film planted the seed that eventually convinced me there was no other place to be than New York City,” says homeowner Cody McBurnett.

2. Dinner and a Movie

Eating dinner and watching a movie is a great way to enjoy a night in. It stands to reason that hanging a movie poster in a dining room might be a good way to get your creative juices flowing.

The colors found in this poster for Basquiat (a biopic based on the life of American postmodern artist Jean-Michel Basquiat) connect to the red walls of the foyer and yellow walls of the dining room in this San Francisco home.

In this Portland, Oregon, dining room belonging to Jamie and Erin Osborne, an oversize framed antique movie poster, which, translated, reads Divorce, American Style, leans against the concrete wall. Erin found the poster at an antiques shop. “I thought it would make a funny wedding present for Jamie. I ended up getting him something else in the end,” says Erin, with a laugh. The table and chairs as well as the corner cupboard belonged to Erin’s grandfather.
