With an eye for detail, interior designer Brooke Wagner layered traditional, modern and rustic decor throughout a new Newport Beach, California, home built for a young family of four. The home features Lucite furniture, reclaimed barn wood, sculptural chandeliers and artistic tile, so its stylistic influences are not easy to pigeonhole, but its overall harmony is hard to deny.
Houzz at a Glance
Who lives here: A family of 4
Location: Newport Beach, California
Size: 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms
Designers: Cynthia Childs (architect); Brooke Wagner (interior design)
The entry foyer features a Dutch door painted black and floors made of reclaimed barn wood; they pop against the custom millwork painted a crisp white.
Flooring: The Vintage Wood Floor Company; paint: All White, Farrow & Ball
A sculptural black iron chandelier 6 feet in diameter strongly contrasts the white lofted living room ceiling. Wagner wallpapered the built-in bookcases to add dimension to the geometric design. Floor-to-ceiling curtains in a deep blue print frame the sliding glass doors that lead to a balcony with breathtaking views.

Though a strictly nautical look was avoided, the living room has some conscious nods to stylish coastal living, with items like the striped area rug and rope handles on the Lucite stools. The coffee tables are a custom design created by Wagner; they were paired up to better fit the scale of the room.
The extra-wide dining table was custom designed and accommodates a settee at both ends. The Lucite chandelier connects to the stools found in the living room. Finally, the gray area rug has metallic threads running through it for additional glam.

The sculptural black tile backsplash in the butler’s panty is a favorite of guests. “Everyone who sees it, touches it. It has a real 3D quality to it,” Wagner says. The homeowners’ colorful glassware collection lines the middle row of glass door cabinets.

Lucite found its way into the kitchen too in stylish stools topped with bold, playful patterned seats. The countertops are a mix of Delano marble on the island and black soapstone near the gas range.

A pot filler is located above the black La Cornue gas range.
Another angle of the kitchen highlights its farmhouse sink, mini subway tile backsplash and Shaker-style cabinets, all in white.

The glass chandelier in the breakfast-room solarium was the first item purchased for the home. “The graceful curves of the chandelier help soften the rigid black lines of the space,” Wagner says. The round zinc-topped table is surrounded by laminate-covered dining chairs that can be wiped cleaned with a wet sponge — perfect for a family with two young children.

A wine cellar with a glass door provides a stylish way to exhibit the homeowners’ wine collection and a visual moment at the end of the first-floor hallway.
In the home office, distressed leather chairs with brass frames sit in front of a galvanized metal desk and an executive chair.

The office features custom built-in bookcases painted a muted blue from Farrow & Ball. Three brass task-lamp sconces provide a stylish accent and lighting.
One of the homeowners was raised in Arizona and wanted Wagner to include some cowboy-inspired decor in the family room. The space features a large leather sectional, herringbone wood floors and Western-inspired art.

Reclaimed barn wood was used to create the wall that houses the room’s flat-screen television. A large wicker basket is used as a coffee table with additional storage.

The bright patio off the family room features a collection of outdoor furniture covered in a gray fabric made by Perennials.

One of the home’s six bathrooms features a fantastic mix of rustic and modern designs. The wall tile mimics brick, and the industrial faucet provides a ruggedness that is balanced by the elegant gold mirror and glass sconces.
