Why hang a static display of artwork on your walls when you can curate your own ever-changing exhibition of new paintings and projects? Simply arrange a group of clipboards above the bed or desk or in the living room to show off your individual style, or use them as a place to keep cool clippings and visual inspiration.
Where We Saw It
In Lize Smeaton-Fox’s eclectic bedroom in her Melbourne home. Full story.
Smeaton-Fox says: “I have a lot of original art that I’ve had framed behind glass, and I really like the mix of behind-glass and in-the-flesh, so to speak. I thought this was an economical and simple way to display works. These prints by Jessie Breakwell are done on paper, so a clipboard was perfect, and with the hole already in the top of the clipboard, it’s so simple to hang. I’ve hung art on clipboards for years. Framing can be so expensive, and it adds up if you’re a collector. An entire row of clipboard art can be really striking.”
What You’ll Need
Clipboard
Hammer and nails, if hanging
Chosen piece of artwork (don’t forget to measure the clipboard before you commit to the print)
Cost: You can buy hardboard clipboards for a few dollars.
Difficulty rating: Easy-peasy
Try It at Home
The great thing about this idea is that it’s incredibly versatile and you can change up the look in a heartbeat. Buy clipboards at your local office supply store for a clean and orderly look. Or if you want to add a bit more character, go “salon style” with a selection of different types, sizes and materials. All that’s left is to select your prints. You could choose anything from kids’ artwork to LPs.
Using her styling knowledge and a collection of vintage flea market finds, Joanna Madden turned her New Jersey home into a beautiful space full of accumulated pieces that are artfully displayed. On a studio wall hangs a gallery of vintage floral oil paintings found at flea markets. “Usually they come in ugly, cheap frames,” Madden says. “So I take them out and hang them with large vintage binder clips.”
Paula Mills from Sweet William uses this trick to display vintage postcards in her living room.
And you don’t even need a print. This clever (and demanding) soul has illustrated clipboards using black markers. Washi tape also would work well.
