As kids mature into young adults, their playrooms also can make the leap. The owners of this Connecticut home had always felt that the large, open room on their second floor had no definitive design or function, so as their children transitioned to early adulthood, they turned to interior designer Chris Sullivan Roughan to breathe new life into it. With a mix of bold colors and patterns along with subdued walls and classic pieces, this pretty family room never talks down to the kids.

Bold blue and apple green were selected to be the accent colors. The blue and white striped carpet is industrial grade. “It’s great for heavy traffic, and if somebody spills, it’s very easy to clean,” Roughan says.

To balance the bright blue and apple green, the walls are covered in cream-toned grass cloth, and many of the furniture pieces were chosen in shades of off-white.

The two pottery pieces on the game table were created by Westport, Connecticut, potter Frances Palmer. “Her work is amazing, and she’s starting to gain a lot of recognition for her beautiful creations,” Roughan says.

Roughan designed the curtain to conceal the storage cubby hole. She says it’s great for hiding board games and other items. As for the furnishings, “the rest of the house has very traditional decor,” Roughan says. “So we chose more modern pieces, like the Womb chairs and arch lamp, to create a younger spirit.”

The main goal for the room was for it to be a space that the family’s children could call their own and feel at home in. Roughan says that the homeowners happily report that the goal has been achieved.

“All three of their children regularly hang out together in the room,” Roughan says. “It’s not unusual for one to be doing homework at the desk, a second to be playing cards at the game table and a third to be stretched out on the sofa watching television.”
