Room of the Day: Farmhouse Appeal Adds Calm and Comfort to the Bath

Farmhouse-inspired style triggers happy memories for this couple, who grew up in the country in Mississippi and now live in Savannah, Georgia. An important part of the renovation of their colonial-style home was taking their dated master bathroom down to the studs. The room was covered in pink tile from floor to ceiling, and the layout was dominated by a massive spa tub and L-shaped vanity. Even more pressing was fixing leaks. The beautiful new room functions very well now and feels serene.

What happens here:
Soothing a voice-over artist’s vocal cords; kids fighting over who gets the tub
Location: Whitemarsh Island, Savannah, Georgia
Size: 200 square feet (18.6 square meters)

The homeowners worked with interior designers Victoria Holmes and Lana Salter, who helped them determine a layout that would feel large, open and relaxing. The designers also added architectural touches, such as the butt boards on the walls, and farmhouse-inspired elements, such as the ceramic tile floor that looks like slate. Holmes dubs the overall look “clean rustic.”

One of the most important elements for one of the homeowners was incorporating a steam shower. She is an actress and a voice-over artist and needed it to soothe her vocal cords.

By the way, the toilet is out of view in every shot, and I know you Houzzers love to play the “where’s the toilet?” game. It’s just behind that wall with the robe hook on it on the left side of the photo. That partial wall and the placement provide some privacy.

A new claw-foot tub from Victoria + Albert has a classic vintage look. Wooden shelves with brackets and cafe curtains add more country appeal. White paint and lots of natural light make the room calm and airy. “The homeowners love the way the sunlight streams in through the windows,” Holmes says.

The designers took full advantage of the small area between the tub and the shower. The separator serves as a bench on the shower side and has another ledge for items like bubble bath and plants on the tub side. It is covered in a slate-like ceramic, just like the floors.

One of the homeowners was set on a beautiful blue for the ceiling, a wonderful touch for an area that’s often overlooked. Also adding color is a charming Grandma Moses-esque country scene. “The painting was the homeowners’ own, and it really helped the color scheme,” Holmes says.

They found the unique vanity with shuttered doors and a bluestone countertop at Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta. It brings in lovely wood that contrasts with all of the white.

Tip: When searching for a long mirror to place over the vanity, look at floor-length mirrors to hang horizontally. This beautiful mirror was an inexpensive HomeGoods score. “We love to mix high end and low end,” Holmes says.

The best low-end score in the room has high-end quality. After an exhaustive search of custom fabrics and even crochet artists, the designers found the perfect country cafe curtains at Kmart for $4.99 each.

The new bathroom might just be a little too good. “The homeowners tell me that her three kids all fight over using this tub now, and that if she’s not careful, they will take over her master bathroom.”
