Ann and Mack Kolb’s dining room in Sumter, South Carolina reflects their whimsical tastes and showcases their ever-growing collection of art. With the help of longtime friend and interior designer Nicole Norris, Ann surprised Mack this past Valentine’s Day with a new dining room design that blends their shared love and style to a T.

Size: About 300 square feet (28 square meters)

It would’ve been impossible (or at least highly impractical) to completely redecorate the dining room without her husband’s catching on, so Ann first had Norris draw an inspirational sketch of the room. Ann then presented the designer’s drawing to Mack as a surprise gift on Valentine’s Day.
“The space is truly a blend of their tastes,” says Norris. “Ann loves pink, so we incorporated the color through furniture fabric and art, while the blue wallpaper and masculine chocolate molding strike a perfect balance.”

The room’s chamcha wood dining table is one of the highlights of the space for Norris, and was also one of the biggest challenges. “The table is a single slab of exotic wood and as heavy as they come,” says Norris. “I’m still not quite sure how we got it in the room, but it makes such a powerful statement, I’m so happy we did.”
White velvet dining chairs were paired with two brightly patterned chairs at the ends of the table to add a modern touch to the traditional space.
Dining table: chamcha wood, Phillips Collection; white dining chairs: Kudu, Arteriors; patterned dining chairs: Shanghai Peacock, Schumacher; cream-colored bar cabinet; Belle Meade Signature; white buffet: Bernhardt; dark wood cabinet: mahogany, Currey & Company

For the past few years, Ann and Mack have become avid art collectors with a growing collection that leans toward contemporary. One of their favorite pieces, a large red abstract painting by Denver artist Amy Dixon, found a happy new home above the white buffet table.

The chandelier above the dining table is itself a piece of sculptural art, with its circle of glass doves perched atop the brass frame.
“We originally selected another chandelier that was quite lovely, but it didn’t reflect enough light for the space, and it didn’t reflect the personalities of Ann and Mack as well as this one does,” says Norris.
