Get Away From It All in a ‘Glamper’

Whether you think of it as a chic and cheap beach house, a vacation home on wheels or a personal retreat space, there’s a lot to be said for springing for your own glammed-up camper (“glamper”). Shed your preconceptions and consider the appeal of a new or renovated vintage camper tailored to meet your traveling or staycationing needs.
Mom cave. The vintage 1964 Airstream Sovereign seen above and below was completely renovated by Hofmann Architecture to create a remote office and guesthouse for a Malibu, California, mom. The interior is comfortably furnished with a convertible sofa bed, a full-size desk and new appliances. A large awning extends to provide shade inside and out.

Budget beach house alternative. Interior designer Bridget McMullin purchased the 1998 28-foot Wilderness trailer seen above and below for $5,000 used. And she stuck to a budget of $5,000 to renovate it. Now McMullin is able to spend the summers by the shore in a campground for a fraction of the cost of a typical weekly vacation rental.

Portable getaway. Amy and Aaron Carman bought the vintage 1971 Airstream Caravel seen above and left on eBay and completely revamped it, inside and out, for a budget of about $6,800. Now, with its shiny new finish, freshened-up kitchen and sculptural wood wall designed by Amy, the Airstream is ready to travel with the family on all sorts of camping adventures — there’s even a hidden TV and Xbox for rainy days.

Retro color. With a budget-minded approach and a major love of color, the owners of the 1967 Travel Trailer seen above and below transformed it into a glamper perfect for weekend trips. The ceiling boasts cotton-candy-pink glitter paint, and the original range and hood were custom painted aqua. Retro curtains in a diner-style eating nook paired with vintage details (hello, lava lamp!) complete the picture.
Tiki hut. Whether used for backyard cocktails, overnight guests or travel, the vintage Airstream seen above and left has got its owners covered. It got the full tiki treatment, starting with this fun and funky painted door.
Inside, a retro backsplash and hula dancer set the tone. And covering the sink base … a grass skirt!

Shepherd hut. Roundhill Shepherd Huts in the U.K. creates portable structures (like the one shown above and below) based on the accommodations that English shepherds traditionally stayed in while tending the flock. The huts can be customized to include kitchens, sleeping quarters and even a personal pub positioned conveniently in the garden.
Minimalist retreat. Hofmann Architecture fully remodeled the 1971 Airstream Sovereign seen above and below with a sleek, modern aesthetic. When we peek inside, it quickly becomes obvious this is no run-of-the-mill trailer — wood floors, clean lines and even a bathtub set this firmly in glamper territory.
The full kitchen and bath, below, also mean it could work as a longer-term home-away-from-home or guesthouse.
Mobile summer home. Bill and Cathy Johnson bought and restored the 1970s Avion camper seen above and below to use as their summer home, parking it near their favorite canoeing and fishing spots in Tennessee. With new flooring and upholstery and a freshly painted interior, the camper feels bright, airy and comfortable — string lights illuminating the “patio” in the evenings are the perfect finishing touch.

Choosing and Fixing Up a Camper
While there’s no denying that the sleekly shaped Airstream has a lot of appeal, keep in mind there are plenty of other vintage campers with retro cachet — and some may come with a lower price tag.
Jazzing up a plain camper with a custom exterior paint job can add a lot of style for a relatively low cost, and the way you finish the interior will make a huge difference in how it feels to stay in your camper. A small investment in personalizing your camper, whether new or vintage, can have a big impact.
