My Houzz: A Century’s Worth of Charm in Maryland

Angelique and Dan Hoffman’s 100-plus-year-old home possesses features today’s home builders boast about: high ceilings, lots of natural light, a floor plan in which one room flows easily into the next, a large kitchen adjacent to the family room and a wraparound porch. It also has those old-fashioned features that people are thinking of when they ask for vintage charm: lots of woodwork and charming details. The well-constructed and thoughtfully designed house was just what the Hoffmans were looking for.
Houzz at a Glance
Who lives here: Dan and Angelique Hoffman and their daughters, Lily (age 12), Hope (10) and Genevieve (8)
Location: Meyersville, Maryland
Size: 2,500 square feet (232.2 square meters); 4 bedrooms, 2½ baths
Year built: 1910
The family who built the home had owned it for three generations before selling it to the Hoffmans. “We are the first family to own the home outside the family who built it,” says Angelique, who co-owns Silk & Burlap, a home and lifestyle boutique in downtown Frederick, Maryland.

The flow of the rooms was an immediate draw when the couple first looked at the home. The family room, on the main floor, connects with both the kitchen and the living room. The dining room has two entrances into the kitchen, an entrance into the living room and a door that opens to the side porch. As a bonus, two staircases provide easy access to the upstairs rooms. Even though the room originally was much darker, with dated lighting, carpet and wallpaper, Angelique knew she could create the bright and airy look she wanted.
“I was immediately drawn to the home,” Angelique says. “I knew I could make changes with color, light fixtures etc., but it’s the more structural changes that get so expensive. I loved the layout. It has great flow and doesn’t feel like it’s separated into small rooms as much as some older homes.”

Nearly every window in the house is dressed in white curtains. This consistent color adds a sense of cohesion to the decor, even though the living room and dining room boast darker and more dramatic wall colors than the rest of the home. The curtains themselves are a mix. Some are custom made from a linen fabric Angelique found at a local fabric store, and many of the upstairs curtains are from Ikea.
“The white curtains throughout the house was my way of brightening things up without painting all that woodwork,” Angelique says.

The Hoffmans recently renovated their kitchen themselves. They added the cabinets and countertop next to the refrigerator to provide extra storage and counter space. Dan also drywalled over a window on that wall that overlooked Angelique’s office, then he hung shelves for dishes and servingware.
With antique hardware from a local store, glass doors on the cabinets and a butcher block countertop, the new cabinet bank complements the existing cabinets, with the color tying everything together.

The large eat-in kitchen is flooded with natural light. Floor-to-ceiling curtains, black and white portraits of the couple’s daughters in oversized frames and a mix of antique and modern chairs add a bit of drama to the family eating space.

The gray on the kitchen island provides a subtle contrast to the black and white finishes in the room.

Along with white curtains, the home also has lots of white furniture. It seems like a counterintuitive choice for a family with children, but Angelique has found it easy to care for. The sofa and ottoman have washable slipcovers, the white kitchen chairs are plastic and scrubbable, and most of the painted furniture was done by the Hoffmans and can be easily repainted.
“White, for a busy family, can be practical in most cases. There have been times when white has failed me, however. Last year I painted our porch white. Ridiculous how high maintenance that was!” Angelique says with a laugh. “So now it is gray.”
Angelique worked for Pottery Barn for 10 years, eventually becoming district manager of Los Angeles. She left when her oldest daughter, Lily, was born, in order to have more time to focus on family.
Six years ago she opened her store, Silk & Burlap, with her best friend and business partner. Many of the items in the Hoffmans’ home are from the store.
In the dining room, an accent wall is covered in red, black and white wallpaper. A very large lantern-style light fixture above the table adds drama and style.
The other walls in the dining room are painted white so the focus can be on the accent wall.
The vintage 1930s black sofa initially fought with the captain’s chairs, which were slipcovered in an oatmeal-colored linen fabric. Angelique found a budget-friendly solution to tie the pieces together: She dyed the chairs black to match the sofa.
For large dinner parties, they pull the sofa up to the table as a banquette, and an extra leaf extends the table.
Through the dining room is the way into the kitchen and living rooms from the side-porch door, so the captain’s chairs are often moved out of the way to allow for easy traffic flow. Moving them also gives a more casual feel to one of the home’s more dramatic spaces.

An oversized chalkboard, a painted bookcase that doubles as a bar, and built-ins that hold cookbooks and stemware add stylish functionality.

The house’s old-fashioned charm is on display in the living room with the woodwork of the original stair railing.

The living room connects the dining room and family room. Stacks of magazines and a leather butterfly chair keep it from feeling too formal for everyday use.

Angelique’s home office, with its mix of pretty and industrial touches, is located just off the kitchen.
“I love my office. I love how it’s tucked away but it’s still connected to the kitchen and to the girls. With the office right here, it feels like I’m never far away,” she says.
A vintage desk, chair and file cabinet are pretty while still being functional. The bench is a family antique from Dan’s mom.

The wraparound porch has several inviting conversation areas where the family members can relax and catch up with neighbors or simply kick up their feet and enjoy the outdoors.

The Hoffmans had built-ins installed behind the bathroom door to make the most of the small space.
Covering the full wall behind the master bed in curtains brought soft texture into the room. The curtains also filter light from the outside.

A heart casually spray-painted over an antique tufted settee continues the mix of old and new in the upstairs master bedroom.

The white bed with its almost all-white linens sits against a black wall that doubles as a chalkboard for whenever inspiration strikes.

Hope’s pink room is full of sweet touches, such as vintage floral oil paintings and an antique chandelier.

A postcard from the 1930s shows what the house looked like then.
Today the house looks much the same, with updates in keeping with the home’s history.
“I hope our home is a haven to restore and nurture our souls and bodies. I always want it to be cozy, open and airy, relaxing. A place to kick up your feet, set your drink, read and escape,” says Angelique, shown here with the rest of the family.
