“Rustic yet luxurious” sounds like an oxymoron. But this vacation home on Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, Idaho, has just the right balance. The decor celebrates the local flora and fauna, natural textures and regional history while also being comfortably sumptuous. The home was built by a family who used it part of the year and also rented it out; it recently was sold to an extended family doing the same.

Houzz at a Glance
Who lives here: An extended family gathers here and also rents out the house.
Location: Sandpoint, Idaho
Size: 5,700 square feet (530 square meters); 4 bedrooms plus a bunk room, 4½ bathrooms. The property is 2 acres with 365 feet of lakefront.

The Daugherty family purchased the land in 2000 and built the house in 2005 to 2006. They lived an hour and a half away in Spokane, Washington, and used it about a third of the year, renting it out the rest of the time. “We felt strongly that we were very blessed to have this opportunity and shouldn’t hoard it, but share this home with other families who wanted to experience Sandpoint the way we did,” says Kellee Daugherty, one of the original owners. In 2014 the Daughertys sold the home, but they continue to manage it as a rental.

The home is designed to be used year-round, from summer swim time to snow-ski season at nearby Mount Schweitzer. Visitors use the flat, grassy area seen here for volleyball, croquet and horseshoes.

Designer Jodi Fleming recently redecorated the interiors with new light fixtures, paint, stains, furniture and accessories.

When Fleming saw this entry area going to waste, she knew it was just the place for an indoor-outdoor room. “There was just a table in here, but I knew that this is exactly where I’d want to have an evening cocktail, or toast marshmallows right outside it,” she says.

It already had the slate floor and commercial-glass garage door, which opens at the touch of a button. Fleming had the slate extended out to the patio to further blur the lines between indoors and out. The picnic-basket-style coffee table can be packed up and taken outside for a picnic by the shore.

Finding local pieces was an important part of warming up the space and linking it to its locale. Local artist Dann Hall shot the photo on the wall. “Dann’s famiy has been in Sandpoint for over a hundred years,” Fleming says. “He has cataloged the history of Sandpoint and really inspired me to think about how to connect the house to the site and the history.”

Fleming purchased many of the accessories locally, including Native American items like beads, arrows and the woven bowl on the coffee table. The bucket was a local antique find. She also incorporated found objects from the property, like pine cones and antlers shed by animals.

The spectacular views also inspired her. “I sat and looked at the view — there are so many textures around the lake: stones, the rocks, the mountains, the trees — and began to sketch and write down my thoughts,” she says. These textures inspired her to choose textiles in natural fibers like cotton, wool and linen, with an emphasis on the handmade.

Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced “pond array”) is 43 miles long and is one of the deepest lakes in the world, measuring more than 1,100 feet deep in places. It was carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago.

Architect Jon Saylor laid out the house in a composition of pavilions. “Jon wanted to capture the history of this property as a former Indian campground that Pend Oreille, Kootenai and other Indian tribes would use,” Daugherty says.

“We tried to incorporate local rock from Lighting Creek in the fireplace and exterior rock work,” she adds. “The stone amphitheater steps came from Montana and have plant fossils embedded in them.”

The way these pavilions look on the interior is best shown inside in the great room, where the cedar ceiling rises to 24 feet. Despite the height, the room is a cozy spot for gathering with family and taking in the views. The grand fireplace is original to the home and is composed of rocks found on the property.

Most of the antlers and any fur items seen are strictly faux — the homeowners are animal activists and did not want any real trophies in the house. The only exceptions are found antlers that animals have shed around the property.

Swivel chairs and custom sofas provide plenty of cushy seating for the big groups that visit. The birch lamp nods to the aspen trees that grow in the area. Fleming chose the rug for its somewhat native feel. “It looks like it’s black and white, but there are actually fine bits of red, green and blue in it,” she says.

The homeowners came up with the idea for the striking light fixture seen here; they found the canoe on their own and had lights added to it. A horse yoke hangs on the right wall; Fleming had a Native American headress framed and hung on the left. The two log stools nod to the logging history in the area. The baskets, beads, tambourines and horse yoke are all local finds.

The wood on the trim, ceilings and kitchen cabinetry is knotty pine and is original to the house.

Each bedroom occupies a sleeping pavilion. The accent pillow on the bed inspired the color palette in the master bedroom, which is marked by warm creams, grays and wood accent pieces. In keeping with the natural-textures theme, all of the linens are organic.

Fleming designed the bench at the end of the bed and had it made. Mixing metal with worn wood gives rustic style a more updated look.

She incorporated more metal with zinc nightstands and sconces next to the soft upholstered bed. Another locally made woven bowl and a carved bowl by a local craftsman warm things up with Sandpoint flavor. Fleming gathered pine cones from the surrounding woods and added them here and there.

The small antlers seen here are also finds from the surrounding woods. Local beads hang from an interesting lamp crafted from an old fabric printmaking spindle. The kilim pillow adds warm color via a handmade textile. Fleming picked up on warm burnt orange colors in the trees outside and brought in this hue in many of the rooms.

Fleming dubbed this office and extra sleeping bedroom off the master bedroom “the lookout room,” and it is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Bald eagles, ospreys, loons, coots, geese and swans are common sights. “You wouldn’t believe how many bald eagles you can see from here; they nest in the trees just outside the windows,” Daugherty says. “Fall and spring bird migrations are fantastic!”

The lookout room is set up for families who want to have small children sleep nearby. The daybed has a trundle to accommodate two.

Fleming designed each room around something special from the area and commissioned artist Kim Hapke to help her with artwork. The bear pencil drawing seen here honors the creatures that live in the area. “I wanted a common source for something with whimsical style from room to room to capture the fun mood of being on vacation,” she says.

Faux-fur and tribal-inspired pillows as well as a locally found antique side table add more rich textures and colors.

Slate continues from the floor up the spa tub surround in the master bathroom. The vanity is knotty hickory.

The tepee room is marked by another work by Hapke and a resin skull. The colors in the room were inspired by the dashes of burnt orange seen in the views. Fleming found two plaid scarves first, had them turned into pillows and then let them inspire the rest of her choices. The classic blanket is from Pendleton Woolen Mills.

The table lamp is made from the same type of printing spindle as the floor lamp in the master bedroom. Fleming found the side table and the reclaimed-wood bed on Etsy.

More local baskets create a colorful composition on the wall. The dresser is light colored but heavy with texture, including a strong parchment-like trim, rivets and brass drawer pulls.

Fleming found these beautiful Native American arrows on her first trip to Sandpoint, had them framed and let the yellow, charcoal and orange hues found in the feathers and strings wrapped around the arrows inspire the bedding choices. “Finding the pillow and blanket in these colors at Pendleton was really lucky,” she says.

This room celebrates more local fauna with an obviously faux trophy and another work by Hapke that applauds the fish from Lake Pend Oreille (next photo). The bed looks like wood but is actually zinc; the light fixture is an antique that Fleming believes came from a fishing wharf.

The dresser is also zinc.

The bunk room guarantees that everyone in a large extended family has a spot to lay their heads; the house can sleep about 16. In addition to the two bunk beds, the two window seat daybeds are twin size.

The bunk room serves triple duty as a media room, playroom and sleep space. Fleming added stadium seating for comfy sofas and a custom child-size table for drawing, doing puzzles and playing games. Hand-painted paddles and child-size Tolix chairs add color.
