Fountains can provide a welcome screen from street noise, attract beautiful birds and butterflies, create a garden focal point and (most important) invite relaxation. Here are 10 examples of fountains to enhance your garden, from petite to grand and everything in between.
1. Classic courtyard fountain. A two-tiered lion’s-head fountain is a classic choice for a courtyard or patio. Positioned in a garden bed alongside an outdoor dining area, the fountain provides a relaxing soundtrack for alfresco meals.
2. Serene city fountain. An urban backyard that has to contend with close neighbors and street noise can benefit from the soothing sounds of a fountain. Tucked in among shade plants, a rectangular water feature with a simple fountain in the center creates a peaceful mood even in the middle of the city.
3. Burbling rock garden fountain. A natural rock fountain brings welcome movement and life to a water-wise garden of rocks and native plants. An inviting water feature like this one is also wonderful for attracting butterflies and birds.

4. Petite patio wall fountain. Make a small patio feel grand with the addition of an elegant wall fountain. If possible, line up the fountain with the doors leading inside, as shown here — then you can enjoy the fountain whether you are indoors or out.
5. Double-sided fountain with fireplace. With a fountain facing the outdoor dining area on one side, and a fireplace with a seating area on the other, this structure carves out two “rooms” in one backyard. The ivy-twined concrete fountain looks equally lovely on or off.
6. Front-yard fountain. A bubbling fountain can make an enchanting addition to a front garden. For the front yard, stick with a fountain that’s modest in size and has a soft sound — it’s sure to become the highlight of neighborhood walks.
7. Sculptural stone fountainscape. A gathering of natural stone fountains has an artful presence in this backyard. Smooth stones; large, flat rocks; and a creeping ground cover help soften the transition from fountain area to lawn.
8. Lush pond fountain. Plantings around the fountain and water plants in the pool of the fountain add up to a lush, tropical look in this garden corner. A slate-gray concrete surround and garden wall make the green foliage look even more vibrant by contrast.
9. Staircase fountain. Echoing the shape of the real staircase beside it, this stepped fountain makes coming and going a pleasure. Consider using a variation of this design on a steep garden hillside or terrace, or in a side yard.
10. Formal garden fountain. The centerpiece of this classic walled courtyard garden is an elaborate fountain surrounded by hydrangeas. Sconce lighting illuminates the space for evening strolls.
