The breakfast nook — it’s where you settle in with your first cup of coffee, wait for your toast to toast and read the paper on a Saturday morning. Shouldn’t it look as cheerful as you hope to be after downing your cuppa? From paint color ideas to cushions and accents, see if one of these 10 upbeat color combinations inspires a makeover for your breakfast nook.
1. Sky blue and crisp white. An enclosed breakfast nook is a good place to try a different wall color. A light sky blue brings the mood of a glorious spring morning inside (even if the real weather is not cooperating). Crisp white trim and furnishings keep this look fresh and simple. To change things up, try using dishes and table linens in citrus hues like lemon, lime and tangerine.
2. Soft blue, spring green and tangerine. Pale celery green is a mood-boosting hue and looks great on wood furniture — try brushing a coat of spring green on your breakfast table or wooden chairs to give your breakfast nook a fresh look. Pillows in pale aqua blue and tangerine make cheerful companion colors, reminiscent of a blooming spring garden.
3. Blue and yellow. This tried-and-true combo is uplifting and simple to pull off. Use cushion covers in a blue and white print, and paint an accent wall sunny yellow. If your breakfast nook is mostly windows, as shown here, use yellow breakfast dishes instead.
4. Lemon curd and soft gray. Softer than lemon yellow, and slightly muddied, lemon curd is a sophisticated hue. Try it on cushion covers and pottery, against a backdrop of white. Soft gray cushions or painted wood furniture pairs up well with soft yellow.

5. Chalkboard black and a jolt of bright. Have a spare sliver of wall in your breakfast nook? Consider painting it with black chalk paint for a bold (and useful) makeover. Keep brightly colored chalk on hand for jotting down notes and grocery lists, and perk up the space with a few art prints in bright hues.
Even a tiny breakfast nook can get the chalkboard treatment. Paint whatever available wall space you have with chalk paint, and tuck a bright metal stool beneath the counter.
6. Red, white and blue. This classic color combination is bold and cheerful. A denim blue slipcover and cluster of squashy pillows on bench seats is casual and inviting. Repeat the red in several small accessories, like a vase or sugar bowl, pillow coverand striped shades.

7. Red, white and black. Chic and graphic black and white is a can’t-miss color combo for the kitchen. Just one accent of fire engine red is enough to bring focus to the space. Try a pair of red Tolix stools, a red coffee pot or a red fruit bowl. A marble-topped cafe table (like the one shown here) adds texture and subtle color variation.
8. Warm persimmon. A warm, rich wall color in the breakfast nook draws the eye and can make a small space feel like a worthy destination. Keep the rest of the walls in the space white, so the persimmon hue doesn’t have to compete for attention. If you want to bring in other colors, try a slightly lighter or darker shade of persimmon on a chair or cushion, or bring in cool contrast with soft gray-blue.

9. Buttercream and black. A pale yellow or cream wall color is versatile and inviting. Paired with furniture in black and natural wood, it’s simple and modern, but far from cold. A warm neutral color scheme like this feels calming and serene in the morning — just the place to curl up with the paper and a hot mug of coffee or tea.
10. Saffron and spice. Deep goldenrod yellow is an upbeat, spirited hue. The spicy tone of deep yellow works well with other spice-inspired hues, so try it with cushions in cinnamon, curry, mustard seed and clove. Walls painted saffron also make a wonderful base color for arrangements of artwork; finish your breakfast nook with framed artwork and objects hung gallery style.
