Whether it’s the way they help save space or their charmingly rustic appeal, there’s no doubt that sliding barn doors are becoming a popular choice in all kinds of homes. Here are 10 creative examples in homes that include a log cabin, a former milk barn, a turn-of-the-century bungalow and new builds.

Updated log cabin in Ann Arbor. Sam Wotring and Nicole Ray’s 1920s log cabin on a quiet lake near Ann Arbor, Michigan, feels surprisingly light and airy, thanks to the pale gray paint a former owner used to cover the logs. Wotring built the barn door himself, and worked with a local fabricator to make the hardware and sliding track.

New build with a personal touch in Oregon. Allie Jensen’s new home stands on a 2-acre parcel in Wilsonville, Oregon, that once served as a strawberry farm. “Everything I put in my house, I love. When I’m out shopping around, I’m not looking for a specific style; I just buy what I love, and somehow it all works together,” Jensen says. “There is a lot of meaning behind many of the pieces I’ve collected throughout the years.”

Jensen bought the old pine and chalkboard door seen in the previous photo five years ago from a woman in Portland. “I had no idea what I was going to do with it at the time,” she says. “While building this home, I knew it would be the perfect sliding pantry door in the kitchen.”

Another set of sliding barn doors, seen in this photo, carves out a much-needed entry area in the great room. “I’ve never been a fan of just landing right into the great room of a home, and wanted a more formal entry” says Jensen.

Farmhouse Living Room by Corynne Pless
Freshened-up farmhouse in Alabama. Mark and Kelley Ash have spent the past several years updating their North Alabama farmhouse for the past few years — and every detail has been done by the couple themselves. The large sliding door with the wonderful patina seen here was once a fire door, made to contain blazes in a factory. “They’re kind of hard to find,” says Kelley, who was thrilled to get her hands on this piece in Chicago. It’s used to close off the back hallway leading to the master bedroom and laundry room.

Smart storage in Toronto. Meg Gardner and husband Steve lived in their century-old Victorian home in Toronto for seven years before making any renovations. They started with the basement, then went on to update the rest of the house. In the kitchen a smart bank of storage nooks includes a pantry, shelving and a powder room. The sliding barn-style doors allow more room to maneuver, and clutter stays behind closed doors.

Former barn in the Netherlands. It took four years of planning and work for Jacco Fontein and Grieteke de Leeuw to transform their property, a former farm with a separate home and milk barn, into a single residence. The couple brought a touch of the property’s history into the design by using a sliding wood barn door as an alternative to curtains.

Eclectic Hall by Corynne Pless
Small-space savings in North Carolina. The first-floor bathroom of Bill Humphrey and Maria Garuti’s 1918 North Carolina bungalow got a whole new look soon after the family moved in. In the original design, the bathroom door opened right to the edge of the toilet, a less-than-ideal situation. The couple solved the problem by purchasing a barn door slightly wider than the entry, and mounting it on sliding-barn-door hardware installed outside the bathroom.

Transitional Wine Cellar by Angela Flournoy
DIY wine room in Dallas. Newlyweds Ilya and Arina Gurfinkel remodeled all of their 1975 Dallas home themselves. The couple tore out an old wet bar, reused old bricks on the walls and transformed old wood fence pickets into a barn door, turning the space into a rustic wine room. To complete the space, Ilya made custom wine storage racks by drilling large holes into cedar 2-by-4 beams, and hung chalkboard signs at the top of each row to note which region the wine is from.

Magnetic marvel in New Jersey. Susan Gillis and husband Steve weren’t happy with the way the conventional hinged door at the top of their basement stairs blocked the hall when open. After browsing Houzz, Gillis found a solution: sliding barn doors. Kitchen designer Garcia Taborda at Leicht and Christopher Smith at Craft Fabricators worked with the couple to design and build a sliding metal door that does double duty as a space saver and a magnetic display space for kids’ artwork.

Creative reuse in Montreal. Dominique Leroux and Anne-Marie McSween renovated their Montreal triplex using as many materials salvaged from the interior as possible. The frosted glass on the barn door is made from the home’s old windows, and the corrugated metal was repurposed from a former project done by their architect.

Creative kids’ space in Utah. Christi and Trent Thorn wanted their new build in Salt Lake City, Utah, to be colorful and contemporary, and to work well for their three daughters. In a smart move, the couple chose to design small, dorm-style bedrooms for each girl, to provide each a private space while also cutting down on space where clutter tends to build. Each room has a sliding-barn-door entrance (no slamming!), and a window between the rooms lets the girls chat at night.
