DIY: Make a Sweet Gift of Future Blooms

Winter may bring gloomy days, but our homes don’t have to be dull. You can brighten up decor with potted flowering bulbs, such as the fragrant hyacinth featured here. Purchase the bulbs inexpensively in little plastic pots, wrap them in decorative paper and string, and watch them bloom. The plants add a pretty, natural touch to a coffee or dining table and can make lovely holiday and host gifts. Here’s how to do it.
I chose three hyacinth bulbs for their future white blooms and their similar size.
Materials and tools:
A4 kraft paper sheets or scrap wallpaperScissorsTapeDecorative string
Lay the potted bulb at the edge of a sheet of paper. Place it far enough from the paper’s edge to mask the lip of the plastic pot.
Set the bulb up straight and wrap the paper around the pot.
Place some tape at the back to keep the paper in place.
Again lay the bulb on the table, with the tape at the back. Cut a piece of string and place it under the pot.
Tie the string around the pot (one, two or more times) and make the ends even to form the perfect knot.
Do the same with the other pots. You can mix and match papers and strings.
This scrap wallpaper looks elegant, and a linen string adds a more natural touch.
Now you can arrange your bulbs wherever and however you wish, to brighten a room …
… or dress your winter table. They also make gracious holiday gifts.
