A Celebration of Design at Holiday House NYC 2014

http://www.decor-ideas.org 11/29/2014 02:13 Decor Ideas

Sophisticated lounges, relaxing retreats, crystal-filled tablescapes, art from around the world and imaginative rethinking of holidays and celebrations define the displays done by designers in this year’s Holiday House NYC. Each of the 23 designers has his or her own interpretation of the holiday theme. The resulting rooms range from showing inspiring ideas for the upcoming winter holidays and beyond to being celebrations of personal milestones and odes to vacations and travels. The house is part of a seventh annual fundraiser benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Here’s a look at what the designers have put together this year.

2014 Holiday House NYC: Academy Mansion, 2 E. 63rd St., Manhattan; through December 21; open daily 11 a.m.–5 p.m. (until 8 p.m. on Thursdays); $35 general admission. More info

Deck the Front Hall
Design team: Carleton Varney

The holiday theme gets off to an inviting start in the main stair hall. Designer Carleton Varney partnered with Frontgate to show innovative approaches with traditional holiday decor. One of the highlights is the glass-paneled bar cabinet, which complements the sheen of the ornaments and lights. Inviting red leather wing chairs contrast nicely with the greenery and lights.

Galerie des Glaces
Design team: Amy Lau Design

A Versailles-inspired grand dining room is the perfect setting for celebrating Baccarat’s 250th anniversary. Amy Lau teamed up with the company when designing the space, highlights of which include Baccarat’s magnificent chandelier and the 20-piece tabletop setting. The custom cowhide mosaic rug adds to the sense of royal splendor and couture magic that define the room.

Winter Solstice Kitchenette
Design team: ByNoelia

Noelia Ibáñez of ByNoelia describes her kitchenette concept as “the promise of returning sunlight after a period of darkness, with the glimmered light of the universe reflected in our interior space.” The accent chairs and a Philippe Starck armchair provide the perfect spot for getting a glimpse of that universe and the constellations, thanks to the ceiling wallpaper and star-like chandelier, while the soft furs and area rug mimic pure white snow and reflect the spirit of the holiday season.

A Winter Holiday
Design team: Lillian August

To offset the intricate woodwork that lines the walls of this library, Lillian August filled the space with snowy white fabrics to brighten the room. With furnishings from her own collection, crystal accessories, an antique Tabriz rug and two de Kooning paintings, the space has a warm, elegant atmosphere that suits the winter holiday season.

Sparkle
Design team: Kara Mann

Sparkle is all around us this time of year, and sparkling, glittering winter snow served as Kara Mann’s inspiration for her room. There are nuances such as a thin strip of gleaming metal to accent the baseboard moldings and a Gucci fireplace screen. The Lukas Peet chandelier, as well as the clean lines and look of the vintage sofa and coffee table, make the room sleek and sophisticated.

Reflection
Design team: Natalie Kraiem Interiors

Noting that “the holidays bring upon us a time for reflection,” Natalie Kraiem’s design team created “a space where rich jewel tones juxtapose reflective materials and modern art, creating an atmosphere for contemplation.” In this understated space, the wall covering, mirror and stools all play a role in defining the reflection theme.

New Year’s Eve at Home
Design team: Pamela Banker Associates

Leslie Banker, daughter of Pamela Banker, describes this spot as being for “a cozy New Year’s Eve at home with friends and family in a cheerful setting.” The handcrafted, custom-designed game table is the hub of the room, and simple yet fun accessories from Empire Delicious finish the space. Large-scale wallpaper might be a surprise in a small room, but it and the matching drapes liven up the space.

Design team: Patrick James Hamilton Designs

Patrick James Hamilton’s room is a fun and colorful take on Kentucky Derby Day, filled with handcrafted, made-in-America details that distill Derby Day down to its most colorful elements, including pieces from John Lyle and textiles by Villa Savoia. “I’m especially pleased to be showing off the feathered Egret chandelier by ABYU, a nod to the famous Derby Day hats,” says the designer.

Any Manhattan mom (or any mom anywhere) would love to spend Mother’s Day relaxing in this room, by Alyssa Kapito and Vivian Muller of Kapito Muller Interiors. Summer Solstice
Design team: Laura Krey Design

The soft blues and whites in the first-floor powder room were inspired by the colors of the summer solstice. Touches of nature’s earthier hues can be found in the browns and tans of the settee and rug. A floor-to-ceiling mirror with a vintage look visually expands the narrow space. Designer Laura Krey also used custom art and handcrafted items, including dimensional bisque porcelain flowers, by artist Syra Gomez, on the walls and silver leaf details above the Roll & Hill sconces, wanting to help people “see how easy it is to live with the beauty of custom art pieces and installations created just for them,” she says.

Mischief Night
Design team: Louis Navarrete Decoration

With a moody, mystical feel throughout, Louis Navarrete’s bedroom is a haven for daydreaming, contemplating and relaxing. The palette of moody blues evokes a cloudy haze in the night sky, while overhead hangs Hello Sailor, a shipwreck-inspired chandelier created by Warren Muller that includes a saw, chains, an anchor, pirate booty and more.

Honeymoon in Paris
Design team: Décor by Guillaume Gentet

Last year Guillaume Gentet was married in the space he designed for the 2013 Holiday House. This year he drew inspiration from his honeymoon and the Hotel du Crillon to create a pastel bedroom and bathroom filled with art and hand-painted wall coverings. This Honeymoon in Paris suite also showcases the luxurious embroidered linens of his own line and artwork from Chesley McLaren.

25th Anniversary Room
Design team: Matthew Patrick Smyth

This spacious sitting room celebrates the 25th anniversary of Traditional Home magazine and the 125th anniversary of fabric house F. Schumacher, whose jeweled, hand-sewn tape trim was the inspiration for Matthew Patrick Smyth’s entire design.

The space combines pieces from the past with modern elements and is filled with fine art, antique pieces from David Duncan Antiques and Lucca Antiques, and midcentury finds from 1stdibs as well as pieces from Smyth’s own collections. The result is a place where, as Smyth says, “lots of people would want to live.”

Gala at the Musée
Design team: Linherr Hollingsworth

Modernity comes to life in a classical setting on this grand mezzanine. “In creating Gala at the Musée, we set out to design a space that would showcase contemporary and abstract art with a museum-like feeling, yet at the same time, exhibit the warmth of a personal residence,” says designer Linherr Hollingsworth. To seamlessly bring the space together, the design team digitally re-created limestone recessed panels to line the walls between the stairwell columns. To complement the strength of the walls with warm elements, Hollingsworth included her sculpted Parisian Ribbon sconces, luxurious drapes and Scala Luxury brass chairs.

Gallery Hopping in Miami
Design team: Justin Shaulis

In Miami, Justin Shaulis notes, “there is art everywhere, not just in museums and homes,” and he brings a slice of that Miami art scene to New York in this space. The bright, airy and boldly vibrant room features art from several prominent galleries, including a 1975 Andy Warhol screen-print on paper of Mick Jagger, as well as a stunning chandelier from Heller Gallery and a custom coffee table from Pryor Callaway centered in the room. The bright white walls and drapes plus the clean lines of the furniture show off the gallery pieces to best advantage.

Caribbean Island Holiday
Design team: Gary McBournie

Holding true to his signature style of creating tropical retreats around the globe, Gary McBournie brings a little slice of the Caribbean to this living room. He invites guests to “pause for a moment in my room and imagine your feet in sandals and the sensual pleasure of chilled champagne on your sunburned lips as you gaze out at the azure blue of the ocean seas.”

McBournie tented the room in summer hues of green and blue, turning the living room into a cabana. He tied the look together with bamboo blinds and étagères and filled the fireplace with giant conch shells.

An American in Rome — A Memorable Holiday

Ally Coulter’s Italian-inspired living room is a tribute to the historic Trevi Fountain and the beauty of Italian history and culture. She brought her vision to life with a mix of contemporary and 19th-century art, contemporary photography, antiques, sophisticated furniture and accessories, and cozy furs.

As a final touch to the mix of traditional and current, the room includes a piano in the corner and a classic red Vespa against the window.

Ode to Paris
Design team: Michael Tavano

Using the classic French flag colors of blue, white and red for his bedroom, Michael Tavano has created an ode to Paris. The room is anchored by Roche Bobois’ lavish, leather-upholstered Cherche Midi bed topped with custom linens and a fur bedspread. To offset the grand furnishings, Tavano combined Maya Romanoff’s Weathered Metals wallpaper, a glossy lipstick-red acrylic dropped panel and three crystal chandeliers on the ceiling, drawing one’s eye through the room.

Furniture, rug: Roche Bobois; artwork: Shin Gallery; fabric: JAB Anstoetz

In a true labor of love, Tavano himself hand crafted the woven rope-twist Roman shades. He was inspired by the fall 2014 Paris runway collection by Balmain and wanted his space to transcend the separate categories of design, fashion and art.

Midsummer Holiday
Design team: Rachel Laxer Interiors

A teal-blue dress draped with dip-dyed fur caught Rachel Laxer’s eye on a mannequin at the Lanvin showroom on the rue St.-Honoré in Paris. That, in turn, led to a room designed as a midsummer holiday refuge for the glamour girl of the Halston, Warhol and Studio 54 era who would wear that look. The blues, whites and grays of the curtains, chairs and wallpaper create the calm, utopian feel of a midsummer dream. Paintings by Kerri Rosenthal, with their strong brushwork and bold form, tie everything together. It’s the perfect space for catching up on work, hibernating from the world or enjoying morning coffee.

Pauline’s Room
Design team: Taylor Hannah Architect

In the spirit of the goal for this fundraiser, Dee Dee Taylor Eustace of Taylor Hannah Architect named this room for a friend, Pauline, who fought breast cancer. The designer’s goal, in her words, was to create a space full of “sumptuous pure Belgian linen, carpets meant to evoke pools of water and streamlined details that show the room’s beautiful architecture to great effect.”

Taylor Eustace collaborated with ABC Carpet & Home, choosing ecominded pieces such as these patterned sofas, lounge chairs and stunning sconces.

Personal Day
Design team: Caleb Anderson Design

With a sophisticated, eclectic style, Caleb Anderson’s day-off room is centered around a daybed on a silk area rug, reflected in the ceiling mirrors. Antique pieces from Barbara Israel Garden Ornament and David Duncan Antiques offset the bold artwork and create a cozy corner in which to curl up with a book.
