Houzz Call: Show Us Your Thanksgiving Fails

We’ve all had holidays like these: The dog eats the turkey drippings before you can make the gravy; your husband cuts his hand with a knife while chopping onions and has to go to the emergency room just before the big meal; you ordered the entire holiday dinner from a fancy store and the turkey was so salty, it was inedible — and that’s just me. In situations like these, there are only two things to do: laugh and share the story with us.

Let’s be very clear about one thing: All of these photos show examples of people who did it right. That’s not what we are after.

What we are looking for are your tales of when it went wrong. The creator of this lovely table used acorns (a free and abundant fall material) to great effect. To pull another nonwin from the annals of Bowling history, I tried something similar, but I decided to use wax to reattach the acorn caps to the acorns. It’s a thankless and tiring task. The guests came early, and still I wasn’t finished. My sisters-in-law ended up helping recap the acorns, and then suggested we go out for the next Thanksgiving meal.

This pretty fall table has tall metal branches in the middle. It looks and works great because 1. it echoes the bare-limbed trees you find in nature at this time of year and 2. you can see through it. When I was younger, I tried to do something similar, but I ended up making the classic rookie mistake of creating a gorgeous arrangement that was so tall, my guests were peering uncomfortably over it during the entire meal. Talking to the person across from me was like trying to communicate over a hedge.

Now that I’ve overshared with you, it’s time to hear your tales of fails. Did you try a fancy bird preparation and get your own goose cooked? Did a colony of ants run out of the pinecones you gathered for the Thanksgiving centerpiece? Did your table collapse just as your in-laws gathered around for the turkey dinner? Don’t be shy — and please don’t leave me hanging. Show us your photos and tell us your stories below.
