Room of the Day: The Cat in the Hat Inspires a Nursery Color Palette

“It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how.” So says The Cat in the Hat. A piece of Dr. Seuss’ artwork his grandmother gave to baby Pierce and his parents inspired a color palette of navy and gray and a sense of fun. The new room has a large rug for learning to crawl and climb, stylish shelves that can keep lots of fun toys and books corralled in one place, a kiddie piano, a ride-on car and a cozy spot for cuddles and bedtime stories. Don’t let the fun fool you; safety was top priority for interior designer Cory Connor, whose clients were first-time parents.

The Cat in the Hat inspired the blue and gray palette, but it did not turn the room into a themed space. “We wanted to choose something that would grow up with him, that wasn’t too babyish,” Connor says. Some of the more grown-up furniture includes the metal stool/side tables, shelves, metallic throw pillow and the chair and matching ottoman. He’ll be able to use these pieces in a more grown-up room in the future, or his parents can move them around to other rooms in the house.

Safety was paramount. The Roman shades are inoperable — this avoided the need for dangerous cords. Connor hid blackout shades underneath the neatly folded window treatments. On a less important style note, this keeps them from getting messy-looking the way Roman shades can sometimes. Also for safety, the crib is bumper-free.

“I knew I wanted horizontal stripes in here, but I wanted it to be really subtle,” Connor says. She used Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore at 100% for the darker stripe and at 50% for the lighter one. She also added dark-stained wood to the mix, staining the shelves to match the crib and changing table (not shown).

A classic Vilac Ride-On Car is a sophisticated touch that will be fun for Pierce, while the “P” sign puts his initial in lights and adds a graphic punch. A little dash of red here and there, in the form of the piano and the vintage replica clock play off the colors in The Cat in the Hat artwork.

“The framed items all have special meaning to my clients,” Connor says. They tell of Pierce’s family history and include medals, the sheet music to the Dartmouth song (a common alma mater in the family), a vintage ad from a family business and his own birth announcement.
