Dandelions Pop Up in Home Décor

In my part of the world, there are a few dandelions left that have gone to seed. If I’m walking alone, I go past them without a thought. But when I’m with my preschool-aged child, each fuzzy orb holds the promise of a wish and must be plucked, examined and — with a mighty puff — dispersed.
Dandelions are the bane of existence for some gardeners, but I’ve never met a child who doesn’t love them. Perhaps it’s that memory of childhood wish-making that attracts homeowners and designers to dandelion forms inside the house.
Or maybe it’s the fact that, when you look at them closely, the globular seed heads really are beautiful. Whatever the reason, dandelions are popping up like, well, weeds.
In this living room, by Clean Design, a wall sculpture composed of many florets makes a graphic statement against a white wall.
This wallpaper in a room by Svoya studio contains a single, close-up image of a dandelion being scattered. It provides the same artistic effect as a mural.

The grand chandelier in this dining room, by Wheeler Kearns Architects, lends the space an ethereal, almost magical air. It’s a vintage piece that once hung in an Indiana ballroom.

A similar, but far more common, light fixture is the Ikea Maskros. This piece (seen here in a project by Lanefab Design/Build) has been appearing in dining rooms across America as fast as yellow dandelions populate a park in the spring. Its paper shade comes in diameters of 22 and 32 inches — so a statement is assured.

This close-up photograph of a dandelion seed head in a bedroom by Earth Elements Design Center proves that a “weed” is in the eye of the beholder.
The accent wall behind this bed in a room by Judith Balis Interiors shows that the dandelion look can be layered. Seed-head-like forms decorate the wall covering, and it’s finished off with a piece of metal-and-mirror wall art that looks like an abstracted dandelion.

A modernist dandelion motif covers curtains marking the entrance to this room, by Sarah Phipps Design. Step inside and you’ll see the pattern reinforced on the accent wall behind the table.
True, the name of this paper is Fireworks, but its resemblance to a dandelion puff is unmistakable.

The old nursery rhyme goes: “Dandelion, puffs away, make my wish come true someday.”
