Wham! Pow! Bam! The Animated Home

As people gear up for New York Comic Con on October 9, fans are digging out their costumes for the four-day conference dedicated to all things comics, graphic novels, movies, television and more. More than 100,000 people will immerse themselves in a fantasy world for four days, but for some homeowners, the fantasy is a daily reality. In the rooms below, designers and homeowners have provided some comic relief for their interiors.

Photos of Pez dispensers with the likenesses of Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and Charlie Brown animate the walls in this room by Harry Elson Architect. In an otherwise white environment, they make a modernist statement.

An oversize wall covering of a thrilling comic strip makes a big design statement in a home in Wimbledon, London, by Stephen Fletcher Architects.


Rooms with few windows can be dark and hard to decorate — but not this one. London Basement covered the wall with a truly super woman making a splash.

“You wouldn’t have trouble getting your kids into this bathroom,” the designers write.


In another basement room, a family indulged in their love of Tintin. The architects at Cody Anderson Wasney say the belowground space reminded the owners of the French character’s hideouts.

When you want to make a cartoon more arty than comical, abstracting it will do the trick. In this bedroom, by Ba Design Group, an enlarged cartoon face became a mural.

Similarly, an outsize Charlie Brown face done in a pointillist style is a study in geometry, not laughs.

Rendered in black and white (like traditional newsprint), the cartoon images and statements that cover these chairs, from Imagine Living, are more sedate.


And what is pop art, if not a giant cartoon? We can’t say for sure if the artwork in this New York room, by House of Clement, is indeed a Roy Lichtenstein piece, but it certainly gives the otherwise reserved space a pop of whimsy.

This thought bubble in a project by Isolina Mallon Interior Design indicates the purpose of the bed, but the bold graphic painted directly on the wall would never put anyone to sleep.
