For the average landlubber, September 19 may come and go as a rather uneventful day. For others it's International Talk Like a Pirate Day, a parody holiday started by two guys in Oregon who felt everyone should glorify the days when swashbucklers ruled the seas by talking like a pirate, for at least one day a year.
There's no reason the party can't extend throughout the home. For anyone channeling their inner pirate, or perhaps just hoping to stumble upon a buried treasure, we've got a few subtle and not-so-subtle ways to drop anchor on a personal schooner style.
Only a true pirate fan could fashion a galley such as this custom-built loft by Kuhl Design Build. It's got a masthead with a "crow's nest" and a perfect view of the seas ahead.
Scallywags can board via a sturdy netted crosswalk affixed along the room's far wall.
This authentic design boasts its own wheel prop, a climbing rope to the main room and a cozy nesting bed for sleepy pirates.

Offering a similar playroom-type escape, this nautical hull has a more sophisticated feel than that of rugged skull-and-crossbones pirate style.
Anchors aweigh! There are more than a few ways to drift off to dream of fair maidens and digging up a trove of pirate's booty. This anchored bed is front and center in steel blue with matching bedding. A faint treasure map painted behind brings the theme together.
"X" marks the spot with vivid blues and reds here. The galley painting along the far wall serves as an elaborate headboard to a simple bed frame, while a treasure map with singed edges and a meandering pathway leads the way to buried treasure.
Continuing the map theme, this simple wall map leads aspiring pirates to a world of adventure. Pops of red on the muted mocha tones add intrigue and bring the mural and furniture into balance.
In this room fit for Captain Jack Sparrow, dark wood furniture and warm brown tones create a more sophisticated atmosphere. The space is accented with rich leather seating and balanced with wall netting and skull-and-crossbones decor.
You don't have to transform a whole room to acknowledge your love of salty dog sea voyages. Little details such as this treasure map mounted in a built-in desk are subtle ways to set the theme.
Shiver me timbers! This pirate-inspired tree house has a galley-style main house, a climbing net and a pirate's flag. The only thing missing is an extended plank to walk.
Pirates grow up, but there's no rule that says you can't follow the lead of Peter Pan and stay a kid at heart forever. With clean lines and sleek sophistication, this living area stays rooted in reality, while the grand pirate ship picture on the main wall says there's always room for setting sail to Neverland.
