What comes to mind when you think of Scotland? Sweeping landscapes, dramatic coastlines and wide-open skies are some of the things that have come to characterize our views of the country. A quick browse through Houzz shows some wonderful examples of bold, innovative and traditional ways architects have responded to this beautiful landscape. From a modern version of a small shelter, or “bothy,” to a dramatic stone castle, take a tour of some of the best of Scottish homes on Houzz.
1. Splendid Isolation
This Brockloch bothy is a picture-perfect retreat. Perched up high with spectacular views across the Galloway Hills, it combines romantic appeal with the best of modern design.
Solar panels power the fridge and the lighting; large glass doors and a skylight maximize the light and views; and a wood-burning stove keeps things cozy indoors when the storm clouds gather.

2. Castle Drama
Straight out of central casting, this dramatic Scottish castle has an undeniable presence and a magical quality. Subdivided into six apartments, it is now home to a small number of lucky owners.

3. Skye Views
This spectacular home is all about the stunning views across Loch Dunvegan in northwest Skye. A clever mix of old and new, the architecture was inspired by simple stone agricultural buildings found in the surrounding area and uses Caithness stone and Scottish larch.
The building has an undeniably contemporary feel, with large windows running the length of the building to let in those spectacular loch views.

4. Small Treasure
Each Wee House, an example of which is seen here, is small but perfectly formed. Designed by Jennifer Hope, a young Scottish home builder, each reflects traditional Scottish architecture in an affordable format.
“We wanted to work with local teenagers to build energy-efficient modular homes,” Hope says. The dark siding and crisp white trim give this home a stately presence above and beyond its small stature.

Designed as a big sister to the original Wee House, the two-bedroom version has a pretty and traditional exterior, with soft pink and gray tones complementing the rolling landscape.

5. Towering Style
Dalcross Castle is a classic sandstone Scottish tower house. When design firm Maxwell & Company was brought onboard to renovate it, it had no modern services, had very few bathrooms and was drafty and cold.
New plumbing and electrical systems were added, and plasterwork and joinery were restored. Eleven bedrooms and bathrooms were created alongside extensive entertaining, eating and utility spaces, and lights now twinkle invitingly from every window.
A trap door leads to secret tunnels.

6. Rainbow Bright
The Victorian baronial-style hotel The Inn in the village of John O’Groats was rescued from neglect by GLM and its client, Natural Retreats. Occupying a spectacular location with dramatic views, the historic property was restored and given a new lease on life as a small series of holiday homes with the addition of a colorful Nordic-inspired timber-clad extension.
