If you’ve been dreaming of barn doors, considering shutters, planning out a bathroom renovation or wondered why something makes it upstairs but winds up on top of your bed, there was an article you should have saved. Inspiration came from fall’s first changing leaves, from a favorite poster and from a design challenge posed by an elm tree. Most important, there was a reminder to those of you who are lucky enough to have grandparents still around to treasure your time with them, and there were suggestions for special ways in which to spend it.
“I had established the habit of picking up things as I went about my day, but with so many tasks, I tended to fall just short of completion. Now I knew I just needed to take things … all the way.” — Alison Hodgson
Every time I read one of Alison’s articles, I find myself nodding my head in agreement and smiling. Then I don’t feel like the only Not Naturally Organized person on Earth. If you’ve been collecting barn door photos in your ideabooks and thinking about them for your home, bookmark this guide.

Reinholdt runs through all of the important functions shutters can serve, including protection from wind, sun, heat, peeping Toms, burglars, ugly views, noise and hurricanes, and also adds a helpful guide to materials.

“The height of mirrors should be based on your own height. Find an average eyeline for everyone using the mirrors and make sure this height is well within the upper and lower borders of the mirror.” — Yanic Simard
While there are many standard measurements for bathroom features like vanity height and tub length, they are far from one-size-fits-all. Simard clues us into lots of tricky dimensional concerns you may not have thought of. This is a must-read for anyone remodeling a bathroom.
