Branches and Twigs for More Than Just Decor

Twigs are a favorite design element of mine. They can be squiggly or straight, rustic or severe, white or dark. So it’s no surprise that they’re effective for way more than just furniture. Take a gander at some of the inventive ways that twigs can be used as architectural elements in the home.

Start with twigs as a banister. The look is totally uncontrived and organic, while the branches’ spreading habit helps make sure there are no spaces for little ones to fall through.


See what I mean about the variety of twigs available? These are actually lengths of branches, and are linear rather than twisty. But the natural feel is the same.


Twig railings are appropriate outside as well. In this wondrous rendition, the organic balustrade ties this home to its gorgeous setting. Check out companies like Mountain Laurel Handrail for railings like this that are built with local building codes in mind.





How about twigs as gates? These remind me (stirring up poignant nostalgia) of the willow gate that provided access to my vegetable garden when we lived in the country. It also, ostensibly, kept the chickens and deer out.

… and rustic yet majestic arbors.


Or consider twigs as window dressing. Aren’t they rustic, imaginative and perfect for this wood and stone cabin?


Twigs work just as charmingly in a more contemporary setting, like this one — where they have been crafted into primitive, bucolic shutters.


Long branches were arranged over homey beams to create an organic awning at this Colorado home.


Moving indoors, I am entranced by this room divider created from twigs. The support system was custom made; it includes a wood base with copper plumbing tubes (available at hardware stores) inserted into it to hold the branches. Brilliant.

Twigs offer a treasure trove of options for decor, inside and out. Best of all, they’re free, abundant and often strikingly beautiful.

Here’s my idea for you: Grab a friend or grandchild or two and a pair of hefty clippers, and head into the woods to see what magic awaits you.
