Kitchen of the Week: Bling Brightens a Luxe Florida Kitchen

Nothing wrong with a little bit of bling every now and then. That was the mantra of these Florida homeowners when they set out to add some sparkle to their new kitchen. A pair of linear nine-light crystal chandeliers takes on the role of sparkly jewelry, while custom ebony veneer cabinetry acts as the little black dress for function and purpose as well as style.

To ensure that the stylish space would be functional for themselves and for frequent entertaining, the homeowners enlisted the help of designer Cheryl Kees Clendenon of In Detail Interiors. She laid out the galley-style kitchen to encourage circulation between it and the adjacent dining area and family room.
Calacatta Gold marble tops the expansive custom island, which holds the main sink and a stainless steel dishwasher. Ebony veneer with a touch of chocolate brown wraps the piece. “It’s sort of the basic-black-dress concept,” says Clendenon. “It’s a very simple island, and the lights are like the jewelry.”

Graphic burled walnut veneer covers the large Sub-Zero refrigerator to the right and echoes the black and brown accents used throughout the space. “People don’t often think of changing up details on a refrigerator, but it’s a really nice feature in this kitchen,” says Clendenon.

A checkerboard end-grain cherry and walnut block tops an iron table that Clendenon designed. The table includes a drawer microwave from Wolf, large storage drawers on each side and an open shelf below for serving trays and other kitchen accessories. Clendenon used this table and the prep sink under the window to establish mini work zones that help with flow.
To anchor the cooking zone under the 14-foot ceilings, Clendenon designed a custom enclosure over the range area, which includes a handsome 60-inch-long custom black cold-rolled-steel hood for ventilation.

Clendenon didn’t bring the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, because access would have been too difficult. Antique mirror and triple-ring iron inserts adorn the top cabinets, which are used to store serving dishes that the homeowners use only a few times a year.
More sparkle comes by way of strips of mirror mosaics from Mixed-Up Mosaics in a niche above the Moen pot filler.
Clendenon designed a plate rack at one end of the custom cabinetry to be both decorative and functional. It offers open storage for the homeowners’ favorite plates and includes iron dowels that echo the iron details used in other parts of the kitchen.
To make part of the kitchen a little less heavy, Clendenon included glass shelves in the prep area. The large window above provides nice natural light.
