8 Ways to Bring Summer Fun Indoors

Have a room in your home that doesn’t get much use? Instead of letting it languish, consider giving that underused dining room, guest room or basement a makeover to turn it into a space you will use and love all summer and beyond. Whether you bring in a Ping-Pong table or a hammock, or make way for messy art, one of these eight ideas will hopefully appeal.

1. Ping-Pong party room. Table tennis and a chalkboard for keeping score are the essentials; a mini fridge and extra seating would be icing on the cake. Pull inspiration from the custom table shown here, and give an old Ping-Pong table a cool new paint job to spice it up. Add casters to the bottom to make it easy to maneuver out of the way as needed.

2. Bunk room. Have kids, young cousins or lots of summer guests? If you always end up having more visitors than beds, consider transforming a spare room into a bunk room so as many as possible can sleep in one space. If you need to keep some of the room available (such as for an office), two sets of bunks along one wall will give you four beds and still leave space on the opposite side of the room for a desk.

3. Messy art room. Instead of holding back from fun, messy projects (for your kids or yourself) because the cleanup sounds too dreadful, why not devote a spare room to messy art? Cover the floors in drop cloths, bring in a battered old table and some easy-clean chairs, and bring on the paint!

4. Game banquette. A banquette makes a cozy spot for sitting with friends and playing cards or board games. To make a banquette on the cheap, scour yard sales for backless benches of about the same height as banquette benches — enough to fill a corner of your space. Once you have your “banquette” pieces, give them a cohesive look by covering the seats with matching cushions and an assortment of fun toss pillows.

5. Postsurf lounge. Don’t let the summer spirit fizzle out when you get home from the beach — keep it going with a fun ’60s-inspired lounge space, complete with bamboo furniture and well-stocked bar cart.

6. Party tables. There’s something about bar-height tables that seems more festive during a party. Put a few in your game room so guests will have a place for perching and gathering.

7. Hammock hangout. When the bugs and sun outside are too much, retreat indoors to your own personal hammock with a tall glass of iced tea and a good book. Alternatively, hang several hammock chairs so a few friends can hang out, too.

8. Empty space. Sometimes it’s better to leave your options open. Clear out a room and see the potential:
Add a disco ball and music, and it becomes a dance club. Hang curtains from the ceiling and add a trunk of dress-up clothes, and it becomes a theater where little ones can put on plays.
Haul in the instruments and hang a backdrop with a band name, and it becomes a practice and performance space for a band.Add folding card tables and string twinkle lights overhead, and it becomes the perfect space for a big dinner party.Tell us: Do you have a spare room? What would you love to do with it?
