Modern rugs come in all shapes and sizes, and are suitable for every area of the house, including hallways and staircases. When introduced into a traditional or rustic setting, they can add vibrancy, a touch of the unexpected and a striking counterpoint. Here are some examples of how to utilize the vast array of designs, colors and textures of modern rugs in traditional spaces.

Go overscale. An overscale floral rug pattern in bright colors provides a pop of bold contrast in this otherwise all-white traditional dressing room. Don’t be afraid to use large-scale patterns in a small space — they can bring it to life, especially when there aren’t many furnishings.

Repeat a pattern. A simple graphic patterned carpet lines the stairs of this traditionally paneled entry. On closer inspection, we see that the modern pattern echoes the geometric leaded glass of the pendant light and the clerestory windows above the seating area.

Be bold and energetic. In this wood-paneled Craftsman-style dining room, a modern black and white zigzag-patterned rug injects bold energy. If zigzags aren’t quite your style, try a bold striped rug for a similar effect.

Line the halls. The crackle pattern of this modern rug is echoed in the reflection of the pendant light on the ceiling of this hallway. Subtle details like this add visual interest without detracting from the beautiful traditional millwork.

Repeat colors. Notice how the irregular stripes of this modern rug repeat the colors of the furnishings and clock, creating a cohesive feel in this casually traditional Mediterranean-style home. Though the rug’s style does not match the architecture of the home, its complementary colors tie everything together.

Gather around. A round modern rug defines the dining area of this updated rustic space. See how the round shape echoes the pendant light and dining table. If you have a rectangular dining table, try a round rug in a lounge area to create a similarily intimate feel.
