My Houzz: A Maui Home Catches the Surf-Lifestyle Wave
In Hawaii luxury and earthiness can coexist, especially when it comes to home design. When remodeling their three-bedroom beachfront home on the west coast of Maui, Thomas and Carrie Rolfes asked the design team at Hue to create interiors that would not only reflect their love for surfing, but one that could withstand the wear and tear of beach life.
The Rolfes and their three children, who divide their time between Maui and Newport Beach, California, wanted a casual yet refined beachy vibe for the home, which is in the Puamana community and has sweeping views of neighboring islands Lanai and Molokai. Designers Jessica McLellan and Wendy Takemoto complied, selected upholstery and furniture durable enough to stand up to the family’s active, ocean-driven lifestyle. The result is a casual beach home with personalized touches and a nod to vintage Hawaii.

Who lives here: Thomas and Carrie Rolfes and their 3 sons
Location: Maui, Hawaii
Size: About 2,500 square feet (232 square meters); 3 bedrooms, 3½ bathrooms
“We wanted the oceanfront living room to have a more playful feel — like a surfer’s hangout,” McLellan says. The red longboard on the wall is part of Thomas’ surfboard collection. The Lee Industries sectional is covered in a Kravet washable slipcover.
Coffee table: Four Hands Home; stools: Gabby; side tables: Palecek; woven basket: Hue
A wood display cabinet contains mementos from family surf trips to Mexico. “They have a lot of urchins and shells collected from the beaches in Mexico,” McLellan says. “Every design touch in the house has personal meaning — no kitsch allowed!” Two koa wood canoe paddles hang on the wall.
The shared living room and kitchen space features Palecek chairs with custom upholstery. The glass Regina Andrew table lamp is from Hue.
A Palecek glass lamp houses the family’s urchin collection. When the boys go on surf trips, Carrie “tells them not to bring back any gifts — just shells from the beach,” McLellan says.
The tray on the coffee table features a piece of coral, a sea fan and a glass cloche. The linen “Beach house” pillow is from Blue Jane Maui. The coral and turquoise pillow was custom made using Robert Allen fabric.
The kitchen’s tumbled-slate mosaic tile backsplash is paired with a limestone countertop. The Gabby bar stools at the island were re-covered in a durable fabric. “We sourced fabrics to withstand a wet bathing suit, sunscreen and sand,” McLellan says.
The custom-made mahogany dining table, by Randy Villa, features legs inspired by bamboo. The Palecek dining chairs are fitted with custom upholstery.
The kitchen overlooks the great room, which opens onto a large lanai. The boys (one is pictured here) typically have a surfboard in hand when leaving the house.
The rattan furnishings in the main entryway and living area were the only pieces that Carrie asked the designers at Hue Maui to hold on to, because they’ve been in the family for so long.
“This is where everyone likes to watch television and lounge together, so they wanted it to be supercomfortable,” says McLellan. The cushions and pillows were reupholstered in S. Harris fabric.
Lamps: Palecek; glass accessories: Hue; rug: Pottery Barn
The stairwell that separates the two living areas displays custom art pieces by family friends.
Carrie, an accountant, wanted her office to be light and inviting. The Lee Industries chair and ottoman are covered in a cowrie-shell-print fabric by Raoul Textiles. The print that hangs on the wall is by one of Carrie’s artist friends.
Desk, chair: Palecek; chevron rug: Serena & Lily
The master bedroom features a pony wall in the middle of the room that acts as a headboard and creates the illusion of a floating bed. The monochromatic white bedding was custom made by Hue.
Rug: Jaipur; desk: Palecek
The bedroom corner has a robin’s-egg-blue Lee Industries chair with a custom-printed silk pillow paired with a bamboo side table.
Carrie and Thomas enjoy incredible ocean views from their bed. “It feels like you’re in a boat,” she says.
This vintage rattan shelf originally came from Florida’s Regency Hollywood Hotel and was found on Etsy. It houses decorative bottles and glass votives, Carrie’s canoe model, a rope knot doorstop and a sea fan.
The boys’ bedroom is spacious, providing plenty of room for play. A contractor built the simple wooden bed frame early on in the design process. Magazines and throws can be displayed on the decorative wooden ladder.
White coverlet: Lahaina Carpet & Interiors; pillows: custom, Hue
The big Lee Industries sectional in the boys’ room is the size of two twin mattresses, making it ideal for sleepovers. The striped red pillows are made of outdoor fabric for durability.
Coffee table: mango wood, Regina Andrew; rug, tripod lamp: Visual Comfort & Co.
“Carrie wanted the guest bedroom to be designed with her sons’ friends in mind for sleepovers,” McLellan says. “It’s open and airy, so we went for a casual, beachy feel.”
Nightstands: wood, Hue; lamps: Arteriors
The guest bedroom, on the first floor, features a woven seagrass headboard for an island touch. The kantha quilt, made of old saris, was hand stitched in Indonesia; every one made is unique. The nightstands were too small for table lamps, so hanging lights were used instead.
Side tables: Classic Home
The powder room, downstairs, has a plantation-house vibe with a touch of modern. McLellan and Takemoto painted the upper walls a stormy blue.
Bath accessories: Hue
Carrie and Thomas’ master bedroom (foreground) has bicoastal and mountain views. Carrie’s favorite surf break is off to the right, while Thomas’ surf spot is on the left.
