Table + Lamp: 10 Perfect Pairings

Having enough of the right kinds of table lamps can make a room feel instantly cozier and more welcoming. But sometimes figuring out which table lamp to put on which table can be tricky — what about that slim console behind the door, the sofa table floating in the center of the room or the console with the huge artwork hung over it? Here I’ve gathered 10 combos of table lamps with the tables they look best on so you won’t have to guess.
1. Modern credenza + big pottery lamps. Embrace the midcentury look by playing with proportions — top a petite, low-slung credenza with a pair of chunky pottery lamps. Or work with one big statement lamp and balance the arrangement by hanging or propping up a large piece of artwork slightly off-center beside it.
2. Bamboo tray table + petite ceramic lamp. A bamboo tray table makes an elegant nightstand, but a large lamp would overpower it, and a task lamp would look out of place. Instead, choose a small-scale ceramic lamp with an empire-shape shade, which is larger at the bottom and best for casting light where you need it.
3. Sofa table in middle of room + airy glass lamps. When your sofa is floating in the center of the room, clear glass lamps won’t block sight lines. For summer try partially filling cylindrical glass lamp bases with sand for a beachy look. (Now the only trick is getting the outlets in the right place.)

4. Buffet + cylindrical lamp. A small, cylindrical lamp like the one shown here provides a soft, ambient glow — just what is needed in a dining room when you already have a good light over the dining table (preferably on a dimmer switch).
5. Long, low media center + tall, slender glass lamp. Position a tall lamp at the end (or one at each end) of the media center — the gleam of glass lamps, whether clear, white or in a hue, helps draw the eye away from the shine of the screen when it’s not in use.
6. Colorful antique chest + colorful modern lamp. The juxtaposition of new and old is a classic decorator trick. Employ it at home by topping an old, decoratively painted chest of drawers with a boldly colorful table lamp in a fresh geometric shape.
7. Round table + gourd lamp. The round shape of the gourd lamp echoes the curve of the round table. Center the lamp for a more formal look, or place it off-center alongside a vase or stack of books, for a more casual feel. A classic combination.
8. Intricate inlay chest + metallic lamp. An inlay chest is stunning on its own; a simple silver lamp complements it without calling too much attention to itself.
9. Slim console + candlestick lamps. Watch out for swamping a narrow console table with chunky lamps, especially if the table is a tight spot, like behind the swing of a door. Tall, slim candlestick-style lamps with petite shades are just the thing.
10. Console with major artwork + delicate tripod lamp. You could go with candlestick lamps (see No. 9) if you are concerned about not blocking any of the artwork; but a sleek metal tripod lamp with a slender base allows you to see most of the art while adding its own oomph. Pick a style of tripod lamp that works with the style of your art — modern with a punchy graphic poster; traditional with an oil portrait.
