As far as kitchen trends go, few are as currently as pervasive as the oversize backsplash.
Designers are using materials such as glass mosaic tile and marble in backslashes that stretch from ceiling to countertop or wrap around entire prep areas. The result is an oxymoron: a subtle design feature that can add that wow factor to even the simplest kitchen update.
Here are seven magnificent oversize backslashes to inspire you.
TerraCotta Properties used standard 12-by-12 polished Venatino marble and had it cut into 4-by-12 strips to create this clean, textural effect.
“We paired it with a black grout, which makes the pattern really pop and showcases the oversized dimension of the tile,” says TerraCotta Properties cofounder Ili Hidalgo-Nilsson. “This whole house is in a historic district, and while the renovation called for adherence to the period style and materials, the slight deviation in tile size, shape and grout color gave it an unexpected appeal, which is classic and modern at once. Plus with so many windows and no upper cabinets, the backsplash had to make a statement.”
This family kitchen has a pop of color thanks to dark turquoise tile, setting off the cabinetry and drawing focus toward the unique double vent hood.

Hampton Design created this exciting see-through backsplash using custom windows from Fleetwood USA during a complete remodel of a 1980s home.
The client was craving higher ceilings throughout the home, so the firm lifted up the kitchen ceiling and filled the void with glass. And yes, the backsplash is completely functional: If you look very closely, you can see where outlets are cleverly concealed in it with faux painting.
Matte black tile adds a contemporary flair to this rustic kitchen, referencing chalkboard menus at a farm-to-table restaurant.
A hint of sea-foam green creates a garden feel in this crisp white kitchen. Plate glass backsplashes like this one require precision installation as well as exact cutting to accommodate appliances and outlets. Unless you’re a contractor, leave this one to the pros.
The trend-within-a-trend is to supersize the oversize backsplash until it could almost be called an accent wall. Notice how this opulent marble backsplash flows past the doorway to meet the adjoining wall.
Silver glass Lapazo tile adds a metallic effect in this colorful kitchen. “I really love the effect of an entire wall being covered in tiles and not just having tiles in the space between the counter and the top cupboards,” says designer and homeowner Tammy Bronfen. “I think it is far more pleasing to the eye and has a lot more effect than just a few rows of tiles.”
