Room of the Day: Serene Glamour Suits a Master Bedroom

This master bedroom had a ’90s dusty rose, fusty floral theme. Knowing her clients were big travelers who appreciated a relaxing hotel suite feel, interior designer Susan Glick came up with a modernized luxe design. While the room serves as a serene getaway for these parents of three, it’s not just for them. Glick also designed it as a spot where the whole family can flop down together to catch up and watch TV.
I forgot to ask whether Daisy the dog inspired the shaggy flokati pillows (seen in the photos below) and creamy off-white hues in the room, but she certainly fits right in. She also shows us that in spite of all the beautiful fabrics, nothing is too precious in here; it’s a hangout spot for all the creatures in the family.
Glick came up with a palette in soothing gray and taupe neutral hues, then accentuated them with platinum and amethyst touches. Sticking to muted tones meant she could add a range of luxe textures, including raised croc-print velvet, metallic beads and nailheads, flokati pillows, crushed mica wallpaper and an antiqued mirror.
Glick played with a range of iridescence. “There’s a lot of nice contrast between matte and shine,” she says.
While the wall-to-wall carpeting and velvet bed are soft and subdued, the crushed mica wallpaper on the ceiling and glass bubble chandelier add the right dose of glitz. Close to the ceiling, polished nickel rods capped with glass finials play off the chandelier.

Velvet, metallic beads, flokati and iridescent fabrics add a careful dose of glamour to the bed.
Mock-croc fabric in soft, neutral taupe adds luxurious texture without going over the top. Framed sea urchin shells and a shaggy throw pillow bring in touches of amethyst, while the drapes throw a geometric print into the mix. “Everything casts a little toward amethyst,” Glick says.
Styling note: You may have noticed that some gorgeous silver d’Orsay Manolo Blahnik shoes made their way around the room during the photo shoot. That’s because they are extra special, as decreed by Carrie Bradshaw in the “A Woman’s Right to Shoes” episode of Sex and the City.

A dark stained mirrored armoire conceals a TV and its components across the room from the bed.
Here’s what’s sneaky about this elegant room: The family of five has plenty of space in which to lounge together and watch TV on the chaise longue, the bed and the armchair. The nightstands offer stealth storage, including two drawers to help keep them free of clutter, and pullout trays serve as spots for books and drinks for whomever is lounging on the chaise and the armchair.
