My Houzz: Comfortable With a Hint of Glam

As an event planner and a personal stylist, Jennifer Margolin loves adding a touch of glam to everything, including her family’s rental. Bold color, patterns and a dash of fashion-inspired decor — including an impressive closet to house Jennifer’s collection of shoes — mark the two-bedroom home.

After years of splitting their time between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Jennifer and her husband, Drew, finally settled down in the bayside town of Tiburon, north of San Francisco.

Before moving two years ago, Jennifer worked with designer Benny Aguilar to create this media cabinet and the custom accent pillows adorning the couch.

Jennifer describes her design style as being “comfortable, but with a hint of glam.” She started out decorating in mostly whites and grays but eventually injected some color, bringing in a bright orange upholstered velvet bench.

Jennifer repainted this bar cart gold and also reupholstered and lacquered a pair of matching fabric armchairs. She replaced the dark brown and sage fabric with a soft gray velvet. “I love making things my own,” she says. “You know it’s going to be a piece that not everyone has.”

“I love mixing colors and prints, patterns and textures,” Jennifer says. Using everything from pops of bright orange to a soft faux-fur throw, she wanted the space to be relaxing for everyone in the family. Drew simply requested, “Can we not do any more pink?”

An outdoor space to entertain in is one of the couple’s favorite parts of their home.

Most of the items in the dining room were carefully collected over time, but Jennifer also enjoys decorating with discount finds from T.J.Maxx, like this pair of lamps.

Despite being busy running her own business, Jennifer adores cooking, and the family tries to eat together at home as much as possible. “I love entertaining,” she says. “My husband will barbecue, and I’ll set up the dining room as a buffet.” Party decor is stored in the cabinets, ready for any occasion.

“I love the look of white bedrooms, but I guess that’s just not going to be us,” Jennifer says. “I wanted something very soothing and relaxing.” Deep plum hues are repeated throughout the bedroom, which features a painting from Bali hanging over the headboard.

Jennifer’s work as a personal stylist inspired some clever storage solutions, such as the dress form used as a jewelry holder.

A pair of designer heels and a small collection of perfume bottles decorate the dresser.

The chair in the walk-in closet is a custom piece that Jennifer reupholstered and relacquered herself. As a stylist, she recommends organizing clothes by color. “I always advise my clients to go through their stuff every six months, or at least [once] a year,” she says.

Drew gifted this shoe closet to Jennifer a few years ago. She has more than 250 pairs of shoes; the bottom drawer holds flats.

For daughter Madison’s room, Jennifer wanted to “keep it really girly, and go with a Shabby Chic, antique look,” she says. The couch and dresser have sentimental value, as they were the first pieces of furniture she bought after college. She replaced the couch’s sag- green upholstery with a feminine mix of pink and white.

The lofted bed was a recent birthday gift for Madison. Now she likes spending time in her bedroom more, enjoying her new playspace.
