You Said It: ‘Yikes, Tough Crowd’ and Other Quotes of the Week
http://www.decor-ideas.org 05/03/2014 19:23 Decor Ideas
Houzzers, this week’s You Said It is all about you. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy (most of) the comments you leave on the featured ideabooks and getting involved in the conversations myself. Without you, what would be the point? So this week, almost all of my favorite quotes are straight from the Comments sections. Thank you so much for your contributions to Houzz!
“Chilly Bin is the NZ version of a cooler or Eskie.
Air Con is the shortened version of air conditioning.
Roof is pronounced ‘rooof’ over there and not ‘ruf’ as I bark out.
Tennis shoes are trainers in the the UK and Oz.
French dressing in NZ is what we would think of as Catalina here.
And there are so many names for body parts that aren’t the same from area to area that can really get you in trouble!
And if you hear someone say, ‘there’s a possum in the tank,’ then don’t drink the water.” — Houzz user bsgibbs
I love language lessons! Thank you, bsgibbs.

“Our Fire Dragon Shantung Maple is growing like a champ. We named him Ivan the Treeable. Our new Japanese Maple in the back is doing well too. We named her Yoshi.” — Houzz user cldavislaw
Another reason to plant a great tree: You get to give it a clever name.

“Bathroom fabulous.” — Houzz user plisder
Yup, that sums it up. This is the most spectacular bathroom I have ever seen on Houzz. Truly glam-or-ous. No shortening this one to just “glam.”

“Great article! You have made ‘Attend Design Week in Milan’ a new hit on my To-Do List. One day! :)” — brendanmichael
Me too, brendanmichael! Out of all the trend spotting I’ve seen from Milan, I am the most intrigued by the graphic patterns on kitchen countertops. I already dread hearing people wailing, “Resaaaale!” (think Stanley Kowalski yelling, “Stellaaaaa!") over this, but I’m excited to see how designers will wind up integrating this trend.

“The smell of the vines always takes me back to being 8 years old and watching my aunt harvest the tomatoes for her sauce.“ — Houzz pro Charmean Neithart
Nicely put, Charmean. This ideabook is making me want to grow my own ’maters, though learning how to make the sauce is going to take some work.

“Too much of our world today is about buying a certain size, color, and/or style all in one stop shopping …” — Houzz user swamp
I agree. If you haven’t ever tried antiques shopping, pack up your tape measure and hit the Ye Olde Shoppes, flea markets and even yard sales. I promise you, an antique you fall in love with will wind up being your favorite piece of furniture.

“Yikes, tough crowd?! Seems cozy and vibrant, chic but on a budget, and by all accounts to the client’s taste. Job well done! :)” — Houzz user klopty
Thank you, klopty. Sometimes I think people forget that the rooms on Houzz were worked hard on by designers, and that the homeowners are proud of them — and that both read the Comments section, excited to see people’s reactions. Constructive criticism is OK, but please consider the golden rule ("Do unto others …") before hitting Send.
Anyway, this was one divisive room, and from what I can tell, it’s mostly because people either love or hate orange — there is no in between — and that’s OK! Personally, I think this room is hot — I love bold, I love orange, and I especially love orange with blue and orange with gray. Thus, it’s a smash hit for me. A man in his mid-20s getting his style on like this — color me impressed.

“I put a mini fridge in my master bathroom. The need arose when my mother-in-law moved in with us. I kept it stocked with wine, beverages and snacks so that I hardly had to leave the sanctuary of my room and risk running into her. Thankfully, she eventually moved out, but the mini fridge stayed!” — Houzz user cherubm
Oh my, this made me laugh. I never would have thought of mother-in-law run-ins as a reason to stock an en suite refrigerator. I think it makes for a whole other hilarious ideabook, or perhaps a Lily Tomlin movie plot.

“I have been trying to find clients that want a natural swimming pool, so please contact me. I have collected a few pro names from this discussion that could be used as consultants.” — Houzz pro Roc+Solid Land Design
The conversation regarding natural pools has been fascinating. What I like about this comment is that is shows one of the many ways Houzz can facilitate matches between homeowners and pros and connect pros with colleagues. Several users asked about local natural pool pros in Texas, and a pro who had been looking to help clients build a natural pool answered the call.
Side note: When it comes to natural pools, a lot of the commenters seem to fall into two camps: Those who fear there would be a snake lurking in the pool and those who aren’t worried about it.

“If you want to see me instantly transmogrify from nice, polite, graceful Becky to a belligerent, raging maniac, put me in front of a window treatment where the panels are too short.” — Houzz contributor Becky Dietrich
OK, I often put in one comment from a user in the roundup of quotations from Houzz contributors, so here’s the reverse. There’s no way I couldn’t include this comment from Becky Dietrich.
