What: A mini fridge in a master bathroom
Location: San Antonio, Texas

Imagine you’re about to ease into a hot bath when you realize you forgot to bring something cold to drink. Are you going to hop out, dry off, put on a robe and trudge through the house for a refreshment? Not likely.
Well, this retired San Antonio couple doesn’t have to think twice about it. They cleverly installed a mini refrigerator smack dab in the middle of their new master bathroom and stocked it with bottled water, sparkling water, coffee creamer, medicines and even wine.
“We’re in such a convenient world with iPads and iPhones,” says Mike Robare, owner of Robare Custom Homes, which designed and built this bathroom. “This adds that kind of instant convenience, without [the owners’] traipsing across the 3,700-square-foot, one-level home for their medicine or for something to drink.”
Robare sees mini fridges as practical, common-sense amenities that get you a lot of bang for your buck. While this addition was part of an overall new build, he says incorporating something similar in an existing bathroom would cost $3,000 or less, including parts and labor. “You’re really just buying a fridge for about $500, then paying someone to make sure there’s an electrical outlet there, then put in a new one,” he says.
He says he’s seeing a lot more of these amenities that turn master bathrooms into master wings that homeowners never have to leave. “People want to enjoy their master suite to the fullest without having to step into the rest of the house,” he says. “You get that with a separate sink, built-in fridges, coffee stations etc.”
Robare Custom Homes’ marketing person uploaded the photo this afternoon; it was created six weeks ago to be submitted to a Texas awards contest for home building. When we spoke, Robare was out checking on the three residential projects he’s working on, including his own home, which, of course, will have a mini fridge in the master bathroom.
