Shelving is something I definitely need more of in my house. A combination of concealed storage and open shelving for books and decor would take my currently unadorned living room and bedroom to new heights. Some of my fave units are fairly modern — which makes sense if you have seen any of my previous ideabooks — but even the natural wood, Americana-esque models are appealing too. Bookcases come in all forms, and they are all great, if you ask me. I hope you enjoy this collection and maybe even find something you can’t live without. — Emily from Merrypad
Tiered Tower Bookcase - $649 A metal frame with mirrored glass shelves is taken up a notch with tiered shelving for visual interest. I love how this prompts you to consider staging items both tall and short.
Cameron Corner Bookcase, Simply White - $369 A corner shelf like this one seems like the perfect piece for doubling storage in a tight space. Try it as a nightstand in a narrow room, for instance.
Dawson Bookcase - $499 I really like the distressed finish of this shelving unit. At 41 inches wide and 31 inches high, it would be a great behind a floating couch in a big room.
Ivar Shelving Unit - $302 Ikea’s Ivar unit is affordable and multipurpose. Its untreated pine is perfect for a DIY stain or paint job, and it would work well in many spaces — maybe in a library for book storage, or as a room divider in an expansive living room.
3.14 White Bookcase - $499 This is another great piece that would serve well as a living room divider. It has so much space for books, home decor and baskets (for concealed storage).
Salvaged Wood Wide Glass Cabinet - $5,295 The price tag puts this piece out of most people’s price ranges, but I do love the look of the reclaimed wood and the idea of having mementos stored safely behind glass.
Blu Dot Chicago 8 Box, Cherry - $1,899 The combo of chrome and natural wood in this modern bookshelf is really attractive. Buy on Houzz
Reclaimed Pine Bookcase - $799 This clean-lined design using iron and pine pulls from Asian influences. It would be beautiful in a contemporary home or a cozy lodge.
Grand River Console Bookcase - $1,322 Hand made in Illinois by Amish woodworkers, this wooden console is clean lined, warm and rich with American Craftsman character.
Threshold Carson Leaning Bookcase - $102.99 The ladder bookshelf has been rising in popularity over the past few years. Here’s a simple option that achieves the look without breaking the bank.
Radcliffe Étagère - $2,800 The detail in this lacquered white shelving unit takes something ordinary and makes it very luxurious. Placed anywhere in the home, it will add a touch of formality.
TFG Tic-Tac-Toe Tall Bookcase, Java - $1,610.35 Reminiscent of a tic-tac-toe board, this modern grid shelf creates impact. Without a traditional surround to finish it off, it stands out as a unique piece in the world of shelving.
Heritage Bookshelf - $299 Industrial and functional, this sturdy shelf is ideal for serial shifters thanks to its casters. I personally would love it in the kitchen for easy access to small appliances and books while I cook, thanks to its mobility.
Denso Composition 003 - $3,279 A little bit of asymmetry makes this otherwise ordinary shelf eye catching and cool. Buy on Houzz
The SSB-1 Bookcase by Erik Heywood - $129 This low shelf is perfect for a small home. It’s equally ideal for children who want easy access to their favorite reads and for grown-ups reaching for late-night lit beside the couch.
Modern Arched Bookshelves by Perfekte Velle - $680 This wall-mounted unit is a delight. It can’t store many books, but it’s perfect for decor and toys.
Stacked Shelf - $139 Stacked shelving is great if you’re looking for something adaptable and modular. I really like the colorful clips and mix of wood and white in this piece.
Denso Composition 014 - $3,049 Cool bookshelf, isn't it? I could see it loaded with paperbacks. Buy on Houzz
Design by Conran Coridon Storage Cabinet - $2,165 I like the idea of being able to conceal items on a shelf. This is a nice alternative to the modern open concepts.
Moda Loft Bookcase, Ocean - $699 A little color on a bookshelf is nice. I like the teal here, but this bookcase is also available in 10 additional finishes.
