After a short stint in Los Angeles, Brad and Flavia Naves were drawn to the family-friendly San Francisco neighborhood of Cole Valley, tucked next to Haight-Ashbury. “I had lived south of Market Street before and loved the vibe,” says Flavia, an attorney, “but knew it would not be the same with two kids, a dog and everything else.”

They lucked out with a home recently renovated by Joshua Mogal of Eco + Historical that had everything they needed for their family of four, including ample space, a downstairs office and an updated kitchen. “And with Brad being the Deadhead he is,” Flavia says, the proximity to music idol Jerry Garcia’s Haight Street home was irresistible. They were sold.

The entire house was painted as part of Mogal’s renovation, and the Naveses loved the colors so much, they kept his color palette. “By using such dark and neutral colors, I am able to bring in colors in the pillows and furnishings,” says Flavia.

The throw pillows are from One Kings Lane, and the music-inspired art prints on the wall are part of Brad’s collection.

“Nineteen-fifties and ’60s-inspired decor really appeals to me, and we have been making the home more our own, little by little,” says Flavia. She is a huge Jonathan Adler fan, because of his midcentury-inspired motifs and bright and bold aesthetic. “We have been adopting some of his furnishings, but also mixing it up with other designers,” she says.

The capoeira print on the wall is from Brazilian painter José Maria Ribeiro. “He is from a small town called Lagoa Santa, in the state of Minas Gerais, and he has been painting beautiful things for our family since I was 4 years old,” Flavia says.

The kitchen was completely renovated by Mogal using ecofriendly tile from Fireclay Tile. Brad remembers walking into the house for the first time, seeing the colorful green tile, and falling in love with it. “We didn’t change anything in the kitchen,” says Flavia.

The original hardwood floors were treated to a dark finish; the rest of the hardwood flooring is reclaimed wood that Mogal installed.

Mogal added this cozy breakfast nook during his kitchen renovation, and Flavia contributed some playful stools from Blueprint in Los Angeles. “We love them because they have a modern but also retro look,” she says.

Daughter Giovanna’s bedroom was painted a soft green, and Flavia quickly took advantage of the situation. “I love the green and how I can balance Giovanna’s obsession with pink against it, making it more a tween room than a little girl’s room,” she says.

“I love our TV room,” says Flavia, “This is where life happens in our home. We are not big cooks, but we love to gather in the TV room and play with the girls. They color, paint, build with Lego, play Twister and on cold nights curl up to a fun family movie and popcorn.”

Sofa: Lampert in Venice Peacock, Jonathan Adler

The downstairs consists of the family’s au pair living space and an office; Flavia works from home a few days a week. When not being used as an office, the space is a multifunctional room for everything from playing music to sleeping.

The exterior of the house also got a facelift during Mogal’s renovation. He replaced the worn staircase and repainted the exterior, which was previously beige with red, white and teal trim.
