Room of the Day: Cheery Cottage Style for a Master Bedroom

One antique stained glass window was the driving inspiration for this cozy master bedroom redesign. In addition to their desire to show off their antiques in the best light, these homeowners wanted a comfy, family-friendly atmosphere in every room of their 1970 colonial home. Interior designer Lisa Gabrielson has been helping them room by room, most recently giving the formerly dark and dated master bedroom a cheery makeover. Here’s a look at how she incorporated and freshened up her clients’ existing pieces while adding lots of color and cozy textures to give the room the cottage feel they craved.
“I wanted to lighten things up a lot with white paint and new wood floors, and give it a cozy cottage feel — white boards achieve that look instantly,” Gabrielson says. The tongue and groove boards are 1 inch by 6 inches; she faced the back side of the boards out for a more rustic look and spaced them out using nickels in between each board. Next the boards were whitewashed with Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, as were other finishes in the room, including brick and trim.
“When I found out they wanted to use the stained glass window, I immediately thought of a gallery wall of interestingly shaped antique mirrors,” Gabrielson says. “There’s power in numbers, especially when displaying collections.” She sourced the remaining pieces at Queen of Hearts in nearby Alpharetta, Georgia. To get the composition right, Gabrielson and the homeowner played around with the pieces by laying them out on the bed. “This is much easier to do with a friend,” she says.
One of the homeowners loves red, blue, green and large-scale paisley patterns. This duvet incorporates all of those colors and picks up on the robin’s-egg blue used for the master bathroom a few years back. Then Gabrielson injected doses of red via custom throw pillows, a Dash & Albert rug and the paint on the vanity.
This vintage oak vanity was another treasured item; it had belonged to the mother of one of the homeowners. She was ready to let it get an update, and Gabrielson brought in more red by painting it and using it as a nightstand.
“I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Emperor’s Silk — the piece had a glossy finish on it, but the beauty of chalk paint is that there’s no sanding or priming involved,” she says. “I just painted one coat and finished up with clear and dark waxes, then buffed it with a rag to seal the surface and enrich the color.”

Gabrielson brought in more robin’s-egg blue by painting her clients’ bowfront dresser. “Without that change it would have felt too heavy and formal,” she explains. Twin lamps add symmetry; a bentwood chair adds a whimsical vintage touch.

One of the homeowners wanted to use this accent chair from her office in the new room. Gabrielson freshened it up with an intricate suzani print, which also ties it into the bright color palette. She kept the wood natural so as not to overdo it on the painted furniture. The custom drapes are in a heavy blue-green and white pinstriped cotton.
Oversize lanterns from Pottery Barn make interesting accents on either side of the fireplace.
“Fortunately, the homeowner already had great vintage pieces,” Gabrielson says. With some new paint, fabrics, floors, walls, lamps and lanterns, the room feels as though it could exist in the most charming of country cottages.
