My Houzz: Relaxed, Classic and Collected in New Jersey

Joanna Madden has a degree in fashion merchandising and a love of visuals. She used both of these while running a vintage home-goods business with her mother, and now uses those skills as the owner of a jewelry-making business, My Funky Findings.
Using her styling knowledge and a collection of vintage flea market finds, she turned her New Jersey home into a beautiful space full of accumulated pieces that are artfully displayed.
Houzz at a Glance
Who lives here: Joanna Madden, her husband and 2 sons
Location: Point Pleasant, New Jersey
Size: 2,000 square feet (186 square meters); 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
Madden and her family love their location, only six blocks from the beach. They credit Madden’s mother, Kathe Van Harte, for finding the house.
It wasn’t love at first sight. Then Madden walked into the living room and immediately saw its potential. She and her husband painted all of the walls in creamy neutrals, replaced all 56 windows, added air conditioning and updated the bathrooms.
This main living area is home to some of Madden’s favorite collected pieces, including McCoy American pottery and items found at flea markets and vintage fairs over the years. The couple built and installed these bookshelves to display her collections.
The family spends most of their time on the opposite side of the living room, relaxing and watching TV. The mantel was painted black to add contrast to the bright neutrals of the walls and white couch. A collection of mercury glass votives lines the mantel.
Madden bought the ottomans at Target, then slipcovered them.
Both the coffee table and the metal basket used to hold books and magazines were flea market finds.

Madden collected these neutral-colored suitcases over many years, finding them at flea markets and antiques stores. They were stacked in pairs throughout the house until she accumulated enough to form a tall stack.
Madden has always loved vintage mirrors, and in her previous home they were displayed around the fireplace. When she walked into this home, she knew right away that they would fit perfectly on this large wall in the living room.
Resting on a pair of rails, the mirrors make a dramatic impression when you walk through the front door.
The sunporch, off the living room, receives a great deal of natural light, making it the perfect spot for relaxing in the summer. It’s filled with rattan furniture that Madden had treated with high-gloss car paint at an auto body shop.
More vintage finds rest atop the table.
On the opposite side of the room sits a collection of mercury glass vases used to hold flowers, natural objects and candles. The wooden frames and sculptures are vintage.
The dining room table is made from an old barn door. Madden attached it to a vintage workbench, which she found picking through an old hardware store. In her words, they “just fit together.”
A vintage cabinet filled with brown and white antique china dominates the rear wall.

Ironstone platters are displayed on a rack in the kitchen. “They’re not all perfect, but that’s the way I like it,” Madden says.
The couple made some changes to their kitchen in 2012. They broke through a bathroom and hallway to expand the space and installed new stainless steel appliances, new countertops and heated slate floors. The cream-colored cabinets are original to the space.
The bar counter, cabinet and island were painted black to add contrast. More cream-colored pottery is displayed in the glass-fronted cabinets. The prints below the “Eat” sign are by Spicher and Company.
The kitchen island is flanked by a trio of vintage drafting stools that Madden considers lucky finds. One was already in the house when they moved in, and the other two were found at two different antiques stores in town. Wooden cutting boards are stashed in a wire basket underneath the island. Vintage metal vases display fruit and plants.
Madden chose gray furnishings for the master bedroom, since it’s one of her favorite neutral colors. She’s particularly fond of the headboard, which was built upstairs because a new one wouldn’t fit through the stairwell. Once it was constructed, Madden upholstered it in white linen, then recently changed the covering to gray wool.
The bench at the foot of the bed is from the Country Living Fair in Ohio.
Across from the bed is a vintage chair slipcovered in white linen. The pillars are old porch posts used as plant and candle stands; the large mirror is from the Country Living Fair in Ohio.
The vintage white metal cabinet in the upstairs hallway was found in Philadelphia. It was originally a vanity, but Madden removed the attached mirror and hung an heirloom wooden mirror over it.
Next to it are more stacked suitcase. “I love the texture and color in them,” she says.
A collection of round vintage mirrors hangs in the laundry room.

Madden’s jewelry studio is conveniently located off the dining room. This is where she spends her days creating pieces for her shop, My Funky Findings. A vintage mannequin makes a handy model.
McCoy pottery fills the shelves here; the green and blue pieces are grouped together for greater visual impact. Chalkboard paint covers the refrigerator, giving the artist a place to jot helpful and encouraging notes throughout the day.
On another studio wall hangs a gallery of vintage floral oil paintings found at flea markets. “Usually they come in ugly, cheap frames,” Madden says. “So I take them out and hang them with large vintage binder clips.”
