Guest Picks: Bedroom Decor a Little Boy Will Love
With my son’s second birthday on the all-too-near horizon, I can’t help but wonder if he is ready for a big-boy room. Right now he is enamored of all things boy: planes, trains, bugs, sharks, cars, dinosaurs and skateboards, to name a few. I want to incorporate some of his favorite things into his room design without creating a theme and without making the decor too matchy-matchy.
I would love to do a complete room makeover; however, when I utter the words “redecorate” and “room remodel,” I run the risk of giving my husband a heart attack. I’m sure he would attest that our little guy’s nursery is just fine the way it is. But doesn’t my hubby know how much I love to decorate, redecorate and then redecorate again?
I’ve gathered here 20 items that would be perfect for my little man. I love that they can be used individually to add some fun to a current room design or used together for an entire room makeover. Also, many of these items could grow with a little guy for at least a few years. Or, if my husband asks, until college! — Sarah from Cozy Cottage Cute
St. Tropez Striped Duvet Cover - $69 The wide stripes on this comforter make a graphic statement. I love the navy, bright blue and gray combo too.
Bug Throw Pillow - $19 Kids love bugs. Why not have a giant critter crawling on the bed?
Mini Academy Task Table Lamp, Antique Brushed Nickel - $99 Despite its small size, this task lamp packs a lot of punch. It's stylish, sturdy and versatile. It can be used on a nightstand for reading and later at a desk for homework.
Weathered Frames - $29 Rustic wood frames are perfect for a boy's room. I would use just one to frame a special print or photograph, or I'd use a few to create a gallery wall with vintage airplane drawings or kids' artwork.
Recycled Canvas Number Beanbag - $179 Counting is very important, so this playful pillow is an essential item. I love how the numbers are so casually stitched on.
Vintage Steel Play Chair - $89 One of these metal chairs would add an industrial element to a boy’s room. The smaller size could be paired with a play table, while the larger size would work well at a desk. As a bonus, they seem like they’d be indestructible!
Entomology Tapestry, Grasshopper - $139 This wall chart is perfect for a boy's room. What more could a little budding scientist ask for?
Preppy Shark Sheet Set - $59 Blue and gray shark sheets are a must. I could just eat them up — or they could just eat me up?
Silver Chain 1472 Paint A light, neutral gray on the walls would let all of the other colors and textures stand out. I like the idea of choosing a gray based on the fabrics already in the room.
Khaki/Navy Drum Flush-Mount Light - $129 I like the large scale of this ceiling fixture. The navy trim contrasts nicely with the natural color and material of the shade.
Wood Hanging Biplane - $59 These wooden airplanes would add visual interest to an often neglected area of a room — the ceiling. I can bet that any boy, young or old, would love to fall asleep looking up at a set of these vintage-inspired airplanes.
Distressed Canvas Storage Bin - $29 I really like the charcoal hue of these storage baskets. I would use the smallest size to add softness to a bookcase; the larger baskets could hold stuffed animals, sports equipment or even dirty laundry.
Harper Painted Letter, Navy - $59 Letters are a great way to personalize a space. I picture one leaning casually on a dresser or hung on the wall as a focal point over a twin bed.
Vintage Schoolhouse Wall Hook Rack - $69 Keep clothes and backpacks off the floor with this functional (and very attractive) hook rack. The labels take it from an A to an A+.
Triangles Rug - $99 The zigzag and stripe combination on this rug is fun and unexpected. Plus, blue and white is such a classic color combination for a boy’s room.
Map Pin Board - $99 I think it’s important to have a place to display meaningful items. A young boy might like to display birthday cards, photos of the family pet or cutouts from the latest toy catalog on this board.
Industrial Shelf Basket - $45 Storage is an absolute necessity. Whether in the closet for organizing seasonal clothes or on a shelf for sorting G.I. Joe toys from soccer balls, these wire baskets can do no wrong.
Collector’s Shelves, Navy - $39 Wall shelves are another must-have for a child’s room. I would hang a pair of these in a reading corner for easy access, close to the bed for bedtime stories or up high as a display for favorite books and mementos.
Harper Blackout Panel, Gray - $79 Soft gray stripes add subtle interest to these neutral window panels. I would add a blackout panel to ensure that my son could sleep in.
Galvi Mailbox - $49 This metal mailbox is one of those things I wish I’d had growing up. It would be such a sweet spot for Mom or Dad to leave notes. And then later on, it could be used to hold office supplies or even — wait for it — real mail.
