Changing the fabric on a sofa can inspire a totally different design statement, says Kyle Schuneman, interior designer, television art director, prop stylist and author of The First Apartment Book: Cool Design for Small Spaces. As proof, he’s pulled together looks for two cool apartments designed around his Monroe apartment-size sofa and other finds from the Houzz Products section. “For the first I was inspired by a masculine, collegiate color palette that feels layered, classic and a bit coastal,” Schuneman says. The second has a “fun and feminine feel while still appearing a bit glam.” Which look is for you?
Monroe Apartment Size Sofa, Tangerine - $958 Schuneman’s first concept includes bold choices for a layered look — what he calls “kind of an updated masculine frat house.” Start with a sleek sofa in burnt orange, punch it up with a navy-striped rug and keep the lines going with a modern coffee table that serves as surface, storage and sculpture. Handmade in the U.S.
Surya Frontier FT-298 Rug, Blue/Parchment - $635.58 Be as rough and tumble as you like in your updated frat house with this durable hand-woven rug. It’s 100 percent wool and brings the fashion without the frippery.
Elko Coffee Table, Bamboo, Blue Base - $960 The sophisticated mix of textures — solid bamboo and powder-coated steel — give this coffee table standout style while happily holding a beer on top and your remotes and latest reads below. The base comes in your choice of six colors.
Mt. Washington Dining Chair, Walnut - $188 As if the combo of walnut and chromed steel weren’t enough, this chair has an eye-catching design. Pull it up to the dining table below or haul it out to the living room when friends are over for the big game.
Dining Table in Walnut, Maple and Steel - $3,990 The steel in this handmade table for 6 speaks to strength, while solid walnut and maple show warmth and depth. Aren’t those just the character traits you’d like your dinner date to see?
Medium Urban Chandelier, Ebony With Black Cord and Gold/Silver Hardware - $595 Staggered layers of Edison bulbs and reclaimed ebony-stained plywood convey thoughtfulness of both the past and the ecominded present. Flush-mount hardware is included, but you can suspend it from the ceiling too.
Sunset Rocking Chair - $154 Rock in comfort without even a hint of a farm porch with this midcentury-style chair with a plastic bucket seat, chrome base and solid beech rockers.
Khristian A Howell Greenwich Gardens 3 Throw Pillow - $69 “Throwing in a quick hit of floral in this otherwise hard-edged room softens the space without losing its feel, because the color scheme stays the same,” says Schuneman.
Bruno Floor Lamp - $317.90 Two adjustable arms mean you can get exactly the light you need, whether you’re vegging out on the couch or working diligently at a desk.
Milk Vases, Bright Orange, Set of 3 - $135 Double dipping isn’t a faux pas with these milk vases; it’s a style statement made with paint. “Mixing textures from industrial elements to beautiful polished woods and smooth ceramics is what make a room come alive as the pieces start to have a conversation with one another,” Schuneman says.
Whitewashed Wood Wall Mural - $101.99 You could spend days gathering wood pieces and gluing them onto your accent wall, or you could affix this textural-looking mural in one fell swoop. It covers just over 100 square feet, is washable and can be peeled off.
Classic Side Table, Walnut - $680 A protective lacquer on this solid walnut side table means spills are no cause for stress. At 15 inches high, this stylish table can bring surface area, style and storage to a tight space. Made in Minnesota.
Monroe Apartment-Size Sofa, Pink Lemonade - $958 For the more feminine cool apartment, “I was inspired by the character Mindy on The Mindy Project, whose wardrobe and apartment are full of bold design, Jonathan Adler accents and personality galore,” Schuneman says.
Heather Dutton Triangulum Throw Pillow - $49 “I love a space that really speaks to a unique perspective but still feels thought out and tailored,” says Schuneman. The retro colors and triangle pattern on this throw pillow have a lot of personality and a crisp look.
Elko Credenza Small, White Oak, Red Base - $1,990 Hide your media equipment and Sex and the City DVDs in here while reserving the top for jewelry, vases and whatnot. The grain-matched solid white oak will go with just about anything, and the powder-coated-steel base comes in six colors. Includes two adjustable shelves and wire management portals. Made in the U.S.
Jonathan Adler Havana Chandelier - $693 A cutout design gives this chandelier a glam slant without detracting from the clean lines.
Round Molded White Fiberglass Table - $454 With a diameter of 30 inches, this modern white table can be tucked into a breakfast nook or can round out a compact dining room perfectly.
Herman Miller Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair - $299 Throw some zest into meals by pairing this lime-green chair with the table above. The flexible back makes it comfortable, while the color and shape make it gorgeous.
Tangier Rug, Celery and White - $110 “Using a bold geometric rug like this really helps give pattern to an otherwise subdued room of solids,” says Schuneman. “I like to think of the floor as my fifth wall.” This one is indoor-outdoor and reversible, so along with the terrific pattern, you’ll get durability and ease of cleaning.
Guthrie Table Lamp, Chrome - $158 Show off your curves with this effortlessly chic modern lamp. Yes, even the shade is chrome, for a major dose of bling.
LushModern Pebble Airplant Duo - $49 These air plants in sculptural white vases are very easy to keep happy. Just mist every so often with the included water bottle and you’re done.
04057 Medium Moonbeam Vase - $92.50 Who even needs a single flower stem with a glass vase like this? Set it on your coffee table and call it art.
Shangri La Jiao Taupe Grass Cloth Wallpaper - $165.98 “Texture is just as important as color when you’re layering in a room,” Schuneman says, “and a natural wall covering is a great way to start.” Each bolt of this textural, natural grass cloth covers about 72 square feet.
Makura Beveled Mirror - $305.80 When you’re not checking out your hair in this beveled mirror, you can simply marvel at how elegant it makes your room look.
Designer Kyle Schuneman, shown here, is currently working on a second book and expanding his upholstery line.
