I love the hodgepodge of topics found in ideabooks on Houzz. This week I learned about this year’s Pritzker Prize winner, toured a unique home, met a new plant and more. Here are some of my favorite snippets of advice and comments.
“You can help save the bees, and you can do it in a way that is not only smart, but also worthy of a design nod.” — Noah Wilson-Rich
Watch Bee Movie, then watch Noah Wilson-Rich’s TED Talk about honey bees, then read his ideabook to figure out how you can pitch in and help save the bees.

“He approaches all types of buildings with the same creativity — as we’ll see, different material choices arise from different budgets — which is one reason Ban deserves the Pritzker, architecture’s highest honor.” —John Hill
Shigeru Ban should now be a household name. If he’s not, Hill’s story is a great introduction to Ban’s work.

“While its delicate appearance belies its ability to handle difficult locations, blackfoot daisy is up to the challenge. Heat and cold won’t bother this pretty native, nor will intermittent watering.” — Noelle Johnson
Is there really anything happier than a fistful of daisies? Perhaps mounds of them growing in tough spots on the ground.

“A place where Disney meets Tudor should be just a little off if it’s going to make sense.” — Bud Dietrich
The Tudor brings the classic cottage style; the Disney brings the storybook. I loved the thoughtful analysis of the elements that make this style work.

“Healthy green plants help clean your air, lift your spirit and fill empty corners like nobody’s business.” — Laura Gaskill
I love Gaskill’s Simple Pleasures series. It always brings up something that’s easy to do and makes my “me time” enjoyable and my house better.

“We tend to associate bold color with modern and contemporary spaces, but you can also inject big color into more traditional rooms.” — Jennifer Ott
I’ve always been wild about orange and yellow, but they do tend to scare people who are used to neutrals. Check out the variety of examples Ott has provided for inspiration to add some bright citrus shades to your home.

“They’re a little rough around the edges, but that’s precisely what I love most about them.” — Taylor Hoff, regarding the benches he made for his San Francisco apartment.
I was so inspired to see someone outfit an apartment with unique furniture he’d crafted himself. Hoff’s retail merchandising background inspired new ways to organize clothing and shoes right out in the open.

“Where seating is not required, think about incorporating bookshelves along the length of your island — perfect for all those cookbooks.” — Kathryn Peltier
I love the way organized cookbook storage has worked its way into kitchen design. I also love all the clever ways people are using their kitchen islands today. Once just an extra work surface, islands now provide seating, incorporate appliances and sinks, and add extra storage and display space. They can also provide a crucial delineation between spaces in an open floor plan. Help yours work harder for your with Peltier’s guide.

“Buy all your unfinished teak furnishings at the same time to ensure they’ll end up the same color.” — Christine Tusher
It’s that time of year: As spring rolls in, reassess your outdoor furnishings and figure out what you need to buy to make your patio a place you’ll enjoy during the warmer months. Tusher outlines everything you need to know about teak furniture, from price to weathering to choosing sustainably harvested pieces.
