Guest Picks: Kick Back in Your Own Surf Shack

The weather is still frightful here in New England as I type these words, but that doesn’t stop me from dreaming of summer! In my fantasy daydreams, I imagine furnishing a teensy little beach cottage in Santa Monica, California, with casual, colorful accessories and easygoing furniture. Plenty of plants, cool art, vintage photography and luxe hippie details (like wood dishes and agate drawer knobs) would be perfect finishing touches. Whether you are furnishing your beach house or just daydreaming along with me, check out these 20 finds. — Laura from Lolalina

contemporary prints and posters by Etsy
‘Good’ Instant Download Print by The Midnight Shop - $5.15 Talk about affordable! The typography and colors of this print are so cool. It’s just icing on the cake that you can instantly print it at home for only about $5.

contemporary indoor pots and planters by Kate Spade Saturday
Tall Plant Pot, Pale Pink - $60 This pale pink planter from Kate Spade Saturday makes an ideal complement to a cactus — and sun-loving cacti are a must in any dream-surf-shack scenario.

contemporary rugs by Pattern Society
Union Rug, Yellow - $99 I adore the vibrant, sunshine yellow hue and simple plus-sign motif of this cotton rug from Pattern Society. It’s priced at just under $100, so you don’t have to stress about sandy feet and dripping bathing suits.

contemporary artwork by M+B
‘Reach Out’ Chromogenic Print I am more than a little obsessed with this entire series of photographs by Hugh Holland. Taken in the mid-1970s along Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Los Angeles, they capture the beginnings of the skateboarding craze. I would love to be able to save up for a massive 30- by 40-inch version of this limited-edition print — maybe someday!

contemporary outdoor products by Kate Spade Saturday
Penny Skateboard - $100 Speaking of skateboarding, have you ever seen a cuter skateboard? I’d be tempted to buy this one to practice on, even though I’ve never gone skateboarding. This is probably blasphemy to skaters, but it would also make a very cool floating shelf mounted on simple brackets.

contemporary outdoor planters by Terrain
Toulon Stand Planter - $598 I love the modern lines of this concrete planter from Terrain. You could put it on your patio, but I think it would be most appealing in a prime spot in the living room (near a sunny window, of course).

eclectic knobs by Anthropologie
Swirled Geode Knob - $18 I love the idea of scooping up inexpensive dressers from Ikea or flea markets and making them my own with paint and special knobs. I could see these luxe hippie agate knobs dressing up a simple wooden chest quite beautifully.

contemporary bowls by Plümo
Wooden Bowl - GBP 15 Why not have wooden dishes? They are lightweight, are nearly impossible to break and add a wonderful organic warmth to the table. Plus, they would look great stacked on open shelves.

contemporary placemats by Anthropologie
Fringe Placemat - $12 A little fringe makes everything feel more special. I love these fringed cotton placemats from Anthropologie so much that I would be tempted to leave them out on the table even between meals.

beach style pendant lighting by Anthropologie
Honeycomb Pendant Lamp - $1,698 This honeycomb pendant lamp is woven from palm leaf and jute fibers that create a gorgeous lattice pattern. It’s extra large too, so it will make a major statement in any room.

eclectic rugs by Etsy
The Pilgrim Beni Ourain Moroccan Rug by Pink Rug Co. - $1,398 You simply cannot go wrong with an authentic Moroccan Beni Ourain carpet. They are plush and comfortable, go with absolutely everything and work in any room. I am especially in love with this one and its vibrant pink accents (look closely to see them).

eclectic window treatments by Anthropologie
Fiddlehead Tieback, Natural - $38 You may need curtain tiebacks, but do they have to look purely utilitarian? These rattan ones in the shape of fiddlehead ferns do the job with style.

eclectic bar stools and counter stools by Plümo
Little Crochet Stool - $168.43 I would tuck this cute crochet-covered stool into the living room, where it could do triple duty as a footstool, a side table and an extra seat. It would also make a fun nightstand. You decide!

eclectic indoor pots and planters by Terrain
Carved Teak High-Back Planter - $68 I couldn’t resist adding another planter, because you really can’t have too many houseplants — especially if you are lucky enough to live in a sunny locale. This one from Terrain, made from unfinished teak, is the perfect size and shape to display your favorite air plants or other succulents.

eclectic sofas by Anthropologie
Continental Sofa, Blue - $2,298 The rich indigo hue of this sofa reminds me of the sea and will hide dirt like a charm. Plus, it’s big and comfy — perfect for napping, which is always a plus in my book.

contemporary coffee tables by Anthropologie
Slate Inset Coffee Table - $698 I love a great, big coffee table — it makes people more comfortable. You can spread out the newspaper and carafes of coffee in the morning, or even sit around it on the floor for a casual dinner. This slate-topped version from Anthropologie is just a little bit fancy.

contemporary throws by Plümo
Pom-Pom Blanket, Natural - $261.14 Toss one of these fair-trade pom-pom blankets from Plümo onto any couch, bed or chair, and watch your furniture piece instantly transform from ho-hum into something utterly charming and bohemian. As if that weren’t reason enough to covet one, you could also use it as a rug or wall hanging.

traditional accessories and decor by Plümo
Blue Jug - $69.53 This aqua jug is not meant for holding drinks, but it would be perfect as a repository for pens, paintbrushes, wooden spoons or cut flowers.

beach style table lamps by Anthropologie
Harbor Crest Lamp Base - $148 One great lamp can instantly elevate a room. I love the rustic, handmade feel and rich color of this earthenware one from Anthropologie. And the fish motif makes it ideal for a surf-side beach cottage.
